What fluid to use for Getrag and NP205?

Postby ArtBee » Thu May 19, 2016 9:44 am

Hello.

Just picked up a really nice black pampered 93 W350 extended cab dually. Am about to do a complete service and was wondering what fluids to use in the Getrag and NP205. Also ... how do you get the extra quart into the gearbox? Truck will be used as a daily summer driver and some car/trailer towing over mountain passes.

Sorry in advance if this is a repeated topic that starts "the great debate". But just looking for something that is going to be a good choice.

Thanks! Art

It's all personal preference besides what's in the service manual...

The NP205, any gear oil will work, 80w90, etc.

As for the Getrag, service manual says 5w30. Some guys run that, 15w40, 50wt, etc. The easiest and cleanest way I've found to fill (and overfill) the Getrag is by pulling the shifter out. Pull the outer and inner cab boots, then the shift tower boot, and you'll see a big 'ol snap ring. There is a large, and fairly stiff spring under the shifter, so what I do is take my big 'ol snap ring pliers, use my chest to press downward on the shifter to relieve the upward pressure on the snap ring and remove it. Then, slowly relieving the shifter spring tension, I can pull the shifter out and fill the transmission from the top. Beats trying to squeeze an extra quart or two through the top PTO cover bolt hole like some folks suggest ;)

When I was new to getrags and didn't know how to pull the shifter, I once very slowly added the extra quart by pouring it over the shifter base and letting it run down. It took a long time. Like really long. I don't recommend it. But it worked.

I'm running 4quarts of 50wt synthetic and one bottle of lucas synthetic just because I had it and didn't have another quart of 50wt lol. it seems better than the 5w30 I was running before BUT I also put a new clutch in at the same time.
