Can I replace cooler lines with rubber hydraulic hose?

Postby Diesel » Thu Aug 04, 2016 7:24 am

The rubber portion of my cooler lines by the radiator are a little deteriorated. A little wet with ATF and such. I see they are part rubber then steel and then back to rubber. Any reason I couldn't just run the whole length in rubber hydraulic hose? If so what size would you use?

I was told if you use hydraulic lines for atf you'll end up with a mess. There's supposedly some special kind of hose for trans fluid

Yes thats correct. I meant to say transmission fluid rubber lines. Its just two hoses going in and out of the core support area. I can't see why it would be an issue to swap them for all rubber. Any idea what size to get?

You can go to an auto parts store and get transmission hose, I have bought some in a kit. So many feet and a few clamps, I can't remember how many. Or, you can get regular hydraulic hoses made. You just need to make sure you have the correct fittings on the cooler and trans for the hose to screw into. If you use regular fuel hose it will deteriorate after a while, but hydraulic hose will be fine, trans fluid IS a type of hydraulic fluid.

The hydraulic hoses we have at work are rated for 3000psi constant, for most petroleum based hydraulic fluids and lubricating oils, water, water glycol, and water oil emulsion hydraulic fluids and air. I don't think Transmission fluid would cause any problems on hydraulic line. It will just be more expensive but better than just regular rubber line because it will with stand the bending better as it won't kink since it has wire in it. I'm running hydraulic line for my fuel lines on one of my trucks lol. What size of rubber line is on there now??

Also I've ran rubber fuel line on one of my cars as the transmission line and it has been on there for 8 years with out any problems.

If you want to pay the price for the line,do it. Works great and won't hurt a thing. The 82 has it done and I've done several customers vehicle the same way......no issues.

Thanks. Any idea what diameter hose I need? And to be clear I'm just replacing the short hoses that feed up to the front cooler. Not any of the lines under the driver.

I just looked thru my local co-op bulk line and found one with at least a 3/8 I.d.

I wouldn't use anything smaller considering the metal line is 1/2"

Cool - if the metal is 1/2" then I'll just get a length of 1/2" hose and take care of it. Thanks

Perfect timing. I need to extend my cooling lines for the 47RH swap.
