Auto trans temp.

Postby fxr3 » Wed Aug 31, 2016 12:45 am

93 w250 diesel. I moved to AZ awhile back and on 110 degree afternoons trans temp gets upwards to 190. I always take od off, if I feel it is trying to hard up a hill or whatever. Welded female spline on torque broke loose 10,000 miles ago and had trans rebuilt, I think it worked great before that, but that far in, decided to rebuild the whole thing. Is 190 too hot, and how should I properly let it cool? Thanks in advance

Is that towing or empty? It's a lot hotter than mine runs but I haven't ever driven in heat like that, maybe 95 at most. I have my probe in the pan and I have seen about 150 after some boosted launches.

where is your probe at? If its in the pressure line going to the cooler its not to bad, but if its in the pan its getting pretty warm, are you running your heat exchanger? do you have an external cooler?

I was towing light trailer once, and empty once. My truck always has 110gallons in extra tank and everything from bottle jacks to 3/4 drive socket sets in it to smooth out ride. 1500lbs+ before anything else goes in or trailer on.
I only know heat exchangers definition on boat motors, but my trans coolers are in front and another rear left under bed.
On 90 degree days with a/c blowing full blast I never really go above 130-150 degree on trans temp.
Engine temp can run up past that 2/3 mark on those super hot days, but turning the a/c off, or slowing down(I often run at 85mph), or catching a down hill grade cools engine temp almost instantly- and the trans temp goes down after several minutes.

There is a trans oil to water heat exchanger under the turbo. (if it hasn't been removed) It warms the trans oil faster in the winter and keeps it cooler in the summer. The oil from the trans goes to the heat exchanger, then then front cooler, then (I think) to the rear auxiliary cooler.

Thanks. Heat exchanger is undoubtedly there, I bought the truck a dozen years ago with 40k on it. And it was truly like new(Had cummins and Dodge in Medford, Or. inspect it ahead of purchase). I had same truck in 2 wheel drive before that since new, and I've missed the nice ride ever since! I think the truck is like its owner- a little uncomfortable at 110+ degrees.
