727 Transmission Gear Shifing

Postby Dodge Dually Nut » Mon Sep 26, 2016 8:45 am

Hi All

I have a 91.5 727 trans in my diesel dually. It has no detent positons when you shift it. I have it out of the truck right now and It seems like the detents are in the trans. Is this a hard fix? Is it the beginning of the end for the trans? It's got 150k miles on it and I don't know if its been rebuilt or not. I have two 727 transmissions so I could steel some parts out of the other one if I needed to. It looks tight as far as no oil leaks. I've just bought the truck and only drove it about 100 miles to get it home.

Yes, the detents are internal. If you pull the pan you can see the "rooster comb" on the linkage side of the valve body. IIRC it is plastic and breaks off the metal. I think it's easy to change out, but I can't remember for sure, been a few years since I've been in one.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

not sure on the diesel 727s but the one gasser 727 and the 3 518s\618s diesels were metal rooster comb with a metal ball and spring. Its easier to install with the "mumbly"(spelling is wrong I think) peg its a metal pin with a point at one end and dished out on the other to hold the ball and spring.

Thanks for the info.

I got my 5 speed manual to fit in a narrow tunnel last night so it looks like I will not have to put the 727 back in. I was getting nervous because I'm leaving for Florida this Friday and I'm running out of time. Will any body be interested in the 727 to buy? I've got 2 of them both from diesels. What do you think is a decent price?

If you wasn't to far away I might be if they was cheap lol. My cousin is actually the one that would be interested as long as they was 2wd.

I also have two 12 valve 5.9 engines. I will be posting on the classifieds as soon as I can. I've got two rust bucket parts trucks 90 2wd and a 92 4wd . Tell me what you need. If I have enough stuff it might be worth the trip. I'm building up a 91.5 4wd 5 speed 1 ton dually diesel. Got a real nice California truck to work with. Got 2 dana 70 rear ends. 3:07 and 3:51. One front dana 60 3:51. Looking for a 81-85 crew cab. Thinking of doing a frame stretch. If there is a good one out there maybe I come to you. If I had a set of rear doors from the crew cab and the door posts I could morph what I have into one. I know a complete cab is getting harder to find. Need a Dana 60 1 ton front end.
