Rooster comb issues (I think)

Postby skylar827_7 » Tue Mar 21, 2017 10:27 am

Let me start by saying what I have recently done on my truck.

Turns out I had a t-case stud broken off sometime, along with most of the nuts being loose, a couple of trips to Ohio from Florida(all those long highway miles and bumpy northern roads) and the last trip up I pulled into the family driveway and behold the seeping tranny fluid beneath the truck, so for an emergency fix thank you Billy mays for the flex seal in a can and rtv I put enough of that on the od housing crack to stop the leak to hold it on the drive back to FL. And it did hold the leak in but I knew I was running on borrowed time.

I got my od housing out and a new od housing and gave it to Ernie at Suncoast ( I don't have a press for the 800lb spring) which I am thankful enough that I live ten minutes away from.. He said the person that put this together last, put it together backwards so that was good to know. 60 bucks and 15 minutes later I had a new od housing with all my old clutches back in a non cracked unit. Tried putting the od housing back on and the splines weren't lined up inside so I got him to realign them and he gave me an intermediate shaft to stick in there to make sure it all stayed tight. Next day I put it all back together, I was a little confused about how to make sure the park rod engages with the park pawl properly but I kinda just guided it in the hole, and I figured if I didn't have a problem with the housing bolting up to the Trans then then my park rod was probably where it needed to be.

I went to start it and It drives and goes into the gears fine only there are no detents for the shifter. My od works fine thanks to my tps delete I already had. I took my pan off and got a friend to cycle through the gears and I can just see that park rod moving freely in and out. Also the truck has almost no power in reverse and I know my fluid level is correct I checked it hot after I drove it.

Just wondering if anyone has had this issue maybe they can shed a little light on the subject, maybe I'm missing something. I just invested in a 93 shop manual from genos garage and I'm gonna see if it has any info about the comb.

Thanks Yall.

I've had the detent ball for the "rooster comb" pop out before and let the linkage get weak feeling. Sucky part about that is having to drop the VB to fix it.

This is my first attempt to upload pics to any forum, but I guess this community is here to help people and if we all try to make it better then, you get what I mean. Thanks for the reply @ellis93.

I got my vb out and found some interesting things. The first pic is of the whole assembly.

The second pic is how I saw the Rooster comb and ball sitting when I pulled it out, the ball and spring wasn't missing but lodged in the bore!

Third pic is of the splines on the Rooster comb, and someone's attempt to weld the shaft onto the comb, there is some play in mine. Luckily I have a new one Ernie gave me that he did a better job of staking it in place. He also grinded the burr that forms on the park portion of the comb so I never have a problem with going out of park.

The 4th pic is of the bore that the ball sits in. Looks like the cause of the deformed bore is the comb banging into it so much that it eventually just bent the bore. You can see the marks where it has been hitting.

If you want to post pics here you need to host them on Photobucket or some other hosting site. Dazedandconfused has a link in his sig on how to do it.
