2nd Gen trans adapters

Postby justin.loehlein » Thu Aug 24, 2017 6:51 pm

So, I'm really interested in swapping a G56 into my 1st gen. I've read that I can use the 2nd gen adpater plate and starter. Is there any difference in engine adapters between the 2nd gen auto and manual trucks?

No difference between auto and manual engine adapters. Make sure you use a G56 clutch setup. A Getrag/4500/5600 use a different flywheel/ clutch.

If your truck has 3:54/4:10 axles I would recommend the later G56 used behind the 6.7's. That one has a higher OD ratio. The older trans had a .79 OD. That is the same OD your getrag has. The newer trans has a .74 OD. The newer trans is 07.5 to current year.

To tell the difference between the two trans. look at the ID plate on the passenger side of the trans. Older trans will have G56-x with the X being a number. The newer trans will say G56-R.

2WD and 4x4 are the same trans. The 2WD drive shaft adapter is just a bolt on item. Remove it and replace the trans rear seal with the 4x4 seal. The output shaft is a 29 spline. The 205 bolts right up.

Here is a pic of Tcase shifter bracket I made. Your truck has a gated Tcase shifter. There is not enough room between the trans and trans tunnel to use it. Just use the shift lever and make a bracket so it hits the stock opening in the floor.

If you haven't seen this thread. It was getrag to G56.

Some applications will need a spacer for the starter. Not sure on this one.

Not needed.

The G56 single disk flywheel has a raised hub on the backside to move the clutch deeper into the trans bell housing. The G56 factory had a dual mass flywheel. Going to a single disk regular clutch the aftermarket had to move the clutch deeper into the bell housing due to the shorter input shaft needed for the dual mass clutch. The hubbed flywheel does away with starter spacer.

Good deal. Just wanted to mention it so's you didn't get ready to put it all together and then find you need one.

Awesome. Thanks a bunch for all the information! The truck does have 3.54 gears, so I'll look for a later transmission.
