Time to rebuild or replace an A518

Postby gassplant » Mon Sep 17, 2018 10:15 pm

I have a 1992 D350 and the automatic transmission is slipping. I don’t know whether to rebuild or replace it. I want to stay with an automatic. What the difference between a stage 1 and 2? Is there any other automatic transmissions that will work? Thanks

What do you plan to do with the truck? A properly built A518 will go a long way, and its cheaper than converting to a 47RH.

Just know that there is a bit of extra work and expense with going 47RH, different engine plate adapter and tranny mount/cross member locations, and wring for the lock up and OD, unless you spend some $$$ on a controller assembly.

Personally I would spend some good money on a low stall converter and go with a good high end rebuild, and be money ahead. ;)

My "built" 47rh with a lower than stock stall feels like a slipping mess without the lockup working. Goes like a bat outa hell when you hammer it, but you can't feel the torque of the lower rpms at all. Even moderate acceleration requires shoving my foot into it some, whereas with the lockup, I could just hit the switch and take off, without giving it a bunch of throttle. Those that haven't drove a 1st gen with lock up don't know what you're missing. A second gen starter is required for the swap as well. Stock shift linkage will work, but will be twisted to the rear somewhat.

You want the lockup unless you buy a custom (read made specifically for your truck 100%) converter. My vote would be for the 47rh.

Agree 47RH is a better tranny. Maybe save some $ by pulling one from a wrecked 94-95 2nd gen? I would still get a built A518 and a nice TC.
