what should i do?

Postby swank » Tue Jan 08, 2008 7:09 pm

found a 93 D350 with the getrag pieces in the bed. everything else is good in the drivetrain (the body is a little rough, be she runs good).

anyway, this truck is going to remain relatively stock because i'm going to put my servis bed on the back of it and prolly run on grease (spend WAY too much driving from job to job).

i need to figure out what kind of trans to squeeze in there. i'm leaning towards an auto due to the fact that i'll need to be able to eat, talk on the phone, take notes, AND tell people what to do WHILE driving. what are good (and inexpensive) options for stock (maybe up to an additional 100hp) autos?

what about common 5 speeds? anything that can be found easily in a junkyard?

anyway, just wondering what you guys think. thanks.

I called about 30, yes 30 :!: junk yards around N. IL for a used transmission for a Dodge truck with a diesel. Asked them to check for the A518, Getrag, NV4500, and the 47RH. Of the 30, 2 had 4x4 47RH's and 1 had a A518. And they wanted more than $1k a piece.

Good luck on finding a "common" auto or 5 spd.....

i'm not necessarily looking for diesel specific since it's not going to be abused. just wandering from jobsite to jobsite, slowly.

School buses with Allisons are fairly common in yards around my neck of the woods.

If you can get by without an OD. A allison 545 will hold up behind the cummins and they are cheap because of the no OD. I have seen them on ebay for $500 or less listed as good take outs.

The 545 is a 4 spd. Here are the ratios.

First 3.45:1

Second 2.25:1

Third 1.41:1

Fourth 1.00:1

Reverse -5.03:1

Here is a link with full spec's of the trans.

Anybody know what's involved in putting the Alli in a d350 2wd?

Mounts, driveshaft short/long,tranny tunnel mods, change different convertor or will it bolt up to stock/SFI flexplate?

Inquiring minds want to know!!!!! (that and my a518 has over 325,000 on her.)

Doesn't the 545 have lock-up too? :D
