I think my transmission is almost dead

Postby nooblet » Mon Mar 03, 2008 4:12 pm

I put a new clutch in my truck because the old one was slipping, and the drive train was doing some weird things that I thought were possibly clutch problems.

I put the clutch in and it stopped slipping, but most of the problems I was having are still there. I get a real bad vibration at higher speeds. I start noticing it at about 50mph and then the faster I go the more vibration I get. When I let off the throttle the vibration completely stops until I throttle up again. The worst vibration by far is at high rpms in 3rd gear though, which I don't understand at all. When I shift from 2nd to 3rd the truck starts vibrating more and more until about 2800rpms, then the vibration just completely goes away??

Also there is a rattling when the truck is idling in neutral.

There is also a lot more backlash than there should be when accelerating and letting off the throttle.

All of these problems were there before I put my new clutch in, but have gotten MUCH worse since the new clutch. Also, when I pulled my old clutch and flywheel, the throw-out bearing sounded like a bucket of bolts and my pilot bushing came out in several pieces.

What do you guys think is going on? Do I just need to get my tranny rebuilt or do you think its something else?

Give me about another year and I'm going to have a completely rebuilt truck

I think I'd be pulling the PTO covers off and checking shaft end play and metal in the trans.
Did you overfill by 1 quart of oil?

Sounds like the 10 bolt in my Suburban. Have a buddy look under the truck while it is in neutral (and turned OFF!) and rock the truck back and forth. The Burb did that and it is the rear-end having about 1/8 turn of play in it  But still held up to full throttle from a dead stop.

The other thing to check is the U-joints.

Enjoy!

When I put the clutch in I changed the oil. It looked like it did the day I put it in 2 years ago, clean and metal free. I over-fill it by about 1.5 quarts. My Chiltons said to put 10W-30 in it, I figured a little heavier wouldn't hurt, so I put 15W-40. What do you guys use?

When I pull the PTO covers what am I looking for? Just turning stuff in there and seeing how much play everything has? I know almost nothing about the inner-workings of a transmission.

I use 15-40 too, "borrow" it from work. ;) Try prying the shafts back and forth, checking for end play. Wouldn't hurt to jack up the truck and rock the wheels and drive shaft, check for play in the diff first. Check the oil in the diff too. Like Jon said, check the u-joints, they can cause vibration too.

I'm sure it wouldn't hurt one bit to replace the motor mounts and transmission mounts. I highly doubt they've been replaced in the 18 years and 320k miles my truck has been in use.

I think I'm going to do mounts and U-joints and see what happens, since they probably need to be done anyway.

So... I went to Carquest and got some U-joints, tranny mounts, and motor mounts. They ended up giving me the wrong U-joints (big surprise) and I wasn't paying enough attention to notice the U-joints they gave me were almost half the size of the 1410's I needed.

So I hop in my truck and off I head to Carquest, when boom, clank clank clank, you guys know the drill I'm sure 8)

Put new U-joints in and all is well... go figure. Good call on the U-joints guys!

It was ironic that I was on my way to Carquest to exchange the U-joints when mine blew up

Looks like a new yoke for the 70 might not be a bad idea now too.

It was ironic that I was on my way to Carquest to exchange the U-joints when mine blew up

Some years ago I had a big half ton chev and I was headed to a buddies to change a u-joint that I knew was going out, about a quarter mile from his house I thought I'd stand on it and let him know I was commin, When the trannie down shifted the u-joint blew apart and I ended walking the rest of the way to his house.

My cb handle is Driveshaft. I've been through at least a dozen u-joints, a dozen straps, 3 yokes and a couple of shafts on my Jeep. One shaft twisted just like a twizzler.

Wheres my cookie? *crickets*

Ok, I know. I dont get a prize. :(

But when I did my U joints as preventive maintenance, 2 u joints had each 3 caps with nothing but powder in them.
