GETRAG 5-Speed Leaking Problems

Postby beerboy81 » Tue Mar 04, 2008 12:39 pm

I have a getrag 5 spd mated with a np205 t-case.. everytime i run hard and park it IDLING its dumping fluid out of the top between the tranny and tcase. it has a lil bit of white foam looking stuff in it sometimes. if i run it hard and just shut the truck off, it doesn't leak. i've been askin round, o'reillys napa autozone even the dodge dealers parts manager isn't sure what the deal is or what kinda fluid to put in. napa's callin for 5w30 motor oil in tranny and 80w90 gear oil in tcase. dodge dealer's callin for 15w40 synthetic motor oil in tranny and automatic tranny fluid in tcase. what the %^$& is goin on here, guys?!?!  lol

Either one of those engine oils will be fine in the tranny. Some guys will use 80W90 in the getrag, I've never tried it.

In the 205, it gets a healthy dose of 80W90 gear oil.

Is it oil coming from the trans or the t-case? Which one is getting low? I'd be keeping a close eye on the levels of oil, and if anything starts making noise. If the trans starts making a new noise, pull it out ASAP and save it, don't drive it until it fails. I'd be draining the oil from each and pulling the covers off the getrag and see if the shafts move front to back. This is bad if it does.

It sounds like the oil is getting hot and when it idles the gears are making the oil aeriated, or foamy and pumping it out. Maybe the breather is plugged up and the oil/preasure is pushing out the back of the trans. Where in MO are you? I'm in SE Iowa.

Just for your information kind of thing... the NP205 case is actually designed to run on 50weight motor oil. In some applications it's actually recommended to use 30 weight also.

I have always run either 50 weight or gear lube and have never had any issues. Just thought I'd mention it.

its the tranny thats losing fluid.. i cant seem to find any kind of VENT?? i thought maybe a vent would be plugged up. i know its not the seal, cuz it doesn't leak all the time, just when the trucks idling. i think its just building up so much pressure in there and spitting it out.. im tryin to figure out why.. thats why i've been askin round for the correct fluid to be put in.

its frustrating cuz no shops know anything about the GETRAGS, just that they're unfortunately, a pretty much obsolete foreign object

Vent Location

Postby Ace » Mon Mar 10, 2008 2:34 pm

The vent is just forward of the shifter on top of the case. It will be wet all the way up the side of the case if it is coming out the vent. I found that out by overfilling a little too much.

What it does if the vent is plugged, dunno. Won't ever be finding out either, because I ran a tube from a port on top of the FastCooler up into the engine bay to accomodate future refills, the end of which is "vented" not "plugged."

Jake, just beware- not many know about these Getrags. There are only a handful of us around the country who are somewhat knowledgeable, and even fewer whom I would call expert. But, your guy may be just fine, too. Just take note of anything that sounds too far fetched, and report back here.

Michael- I'd say Hermitage is south-west central MO. Kind of make a traingle from Hermitage to KC to Columbia. Out in BFE.

apparently, one of the three "plugs" on the back of the shifter lid is MISSING! this is the first time, i've owned a Dodge, more or less, a japanese product. we've tried, in so many ways to knock a 20mm plug in.. failed! so, we're gonna look around for a smaller one.

Before I bought this rig.. This young kid paid a tranny shop to put a new GETRAG 360 Shifter Lid on it (I got the receipt) .. $521 , labor included with parts.. $300 just for the LID itself! (Aluminum) But, the plug is missin.. dunno if they did that or if it popped out itself.. Tranny guy, asked if the 3rd gear felt a lil too "far and soft" upon shifting.. I said, "Nope, it all shifts the same to me, Noise free!"...
