Clutch Master Cylinder

Postby TWorline » Wed Mar 12, 2008 5:56 pm

My clutch master cylinder is on its last leg so I ordered one from an autoparts store and lo and behold that is exactly what I got. Upon looking in the FSM it shows an assembled Hyd. clutch assembly that "cannot be serviced seperatly". Has anybody replaced just the master cylinder and how do you bleed the system?

I don't know about replacing it. Does the new one have the barb for the line, or just a hole? I think there is a roll pin that holds the barb in the MC.
There is a bleeder on the slave cylinder, itty bitty thing. When you're ready, just open it up and pump gently, like for brakes. The other option is to use a vacuum pump, Mityvac or whatever, and draw it out.
I've heard they don't always cooperate with bleeding. ;)

The new one just has a hole but included in the package is a new roll pin and a small seal that fits inside the outlet. Ok I think you can see the bleeder in the picture in the FSM. I think I'll wait till Saturday to change this thing, a couple more days of 1st. gear rolling stops won't hurt anything!

Don't know if I did it right, considering all the talk via the net about how they have to be serviced as an assembly and how they can't be bleed.... but I had the complete system on my crew cab, (90 Dodge Cummins hydraulics) completely apart and dry. Install the system, filled with dot 3 and the clutch pedal was.... limp as ole Pete after surfing the internet. So there's air in the line. Down at the bellhousing, I pushed the master cyl rod in a few times, air jetted up the line to the resevoir, splash a little. Did this a bunch of times, eventually could put the cap on the resevoir, it has a bleed hole, and air would bubble up and out the hole. Did that a bunch of times, pretty much til I couldnt push the rod in anymore or til my hand hurt, and now a rock hard pedal, clutch and hydraulics work like new.

Thank you Bill, I will do it the same way. Sure will be nice to have a working clutch again!

The real irony was, it was still 90deg, and Bill had a SOP record campfire going (we were all at least 15ft back from the flames). All the other years, it was 30-40 deg, and we had 3 sticks at a time going, like a trail drive campfire from the old west.

I missed the YouPorn comment.......

I just got done swaping out the master cylinder. It was not much of a problem, it went like this:

1. Figure out how to get the clip off of the left side of the clutch pedal once I can see it in my bifocals.

2. Enter truck from the right side with steering wheel tilted up and the left seat slid all of the way back.

3. Stand on head under the dash with head lodged between the clutch pedal and kick panel.

4. Slightly depress the clutch pedal with flashlight wedged between head and pedal.

5. Pop clip off of clutch pin and catch in mouth.

6. Assembly opposite of disassembly. ;-)

Yep. When I found out I couldn't shift my truck, I got the slave and MC. To get the hard pedal back, I pushed the slave back and forth several times, then went into the truck and pumped the pedal fast for 30 secs, then slow, smooth strokes for 3 mins (Like I was using the clutch). When all was said and done 20 mins later, I had my truck back!

To get the clip off the push rod, I was either reverse of how I would sit in the drivers seat (head down) OR I was laying on my back with my feet out the truck. That is the only time I like the 6" blocks in the back. I was laying level then.

BTW, do NOT do this in the gravel driveway. I lost that stupid C-clip about 6 times, each time the magnet found it. Also getting it back on was faster by taking the dash out completely. And there they are, hardly any wires in the way and took about 30 mins less. I had to take it off to re-weld the clutch bracket on to the main pedal brackets, then I notice it was NOT the 1st it had been welded

So Tim, what you are saying is you spit the clip back up and it went on the pin? :bs:

DP, you didn't see the frosty chunks of ice forming on the grass near my wife? That was about the time I got up and went to the other side of the fire.
I don't remember exactly what I said, (musta been the 2 beers!) but it was something about how Bill ought to check out YouPorn, good videos or something.

Now if you go on there and search "mision impossible", (the guy spelled it that way) you'll get an eyeful! :hs:
