Tranny question about A-518 VS 47RH

Postby SNOOT » Tue Mar 18, 2008 1:50 pm

Just got off the phone with a supplier. I am trying to get the most bang for my buck. I am going to purchase a tranny from one of the top 4 companies but this one has me wondering because of post I have read here.

Supplier one no brainer tells me no problem I can build you a tranny that will take all the abuse you send its way. However it will not have lock up.
$4,850.00 plus shipping. Includes everything billet input and output shafts, T/C, valve body and DD pan.

Supplier two says why don't you step up and run the 47RH as you then get a lock up converter. I said cool what is that one cost me? $5,250.00 plus shipping. Billet input only, T/C w/lock-up, controller for T/C dd pan and other things that make it a stage 3.

My question is WILL THE 47RH bolt right in with no adaptor or relocation of the starter. I read here when others did this change they had to get differant things to make it work.

I have a 93 4X4 DRW 1TON

i was under the asumption that it was a direct bolt in , then it was a matter of figuring out how you wanted to make the overdrive and lockup converter work .......

i intend on swaping out the 518 for a 47rh on my truck , after i get it on the road .

You will need to change to a engine adapter for a lockup converter adapter. It is deeper than the 518 adapter. That also means a 94+ starter also. To use that starter you need to notch the frame a little for starter clearence.

If ya'll dont mind, could you mention the Brand names? Cuz, im gonna swap out this Getrag. I've discovered, that its wayyyy too weak for the work that I do.. I'm also tired of tryin to be "easy" thru shifting. That just sucks! I'd rather swap it, while its still in good shape and working 100%... In case anyone wants/needs one?? ;-)

You'll need an engine adapter from 94+.
This will move anything from the engine back about about an inch, trans, transfer case, etc...
Scrap the old flex plate and get a good one.
Now is the time to put a rear main in there.

Transfer case will bolt right on, just pop the seal out of the trans case and use RTV to seal it.

Use the TV cable lever off of your A518, the newer levers are a little different.

I didn't move the pivots for the shifter.

I did mill the slots in the trans mount longer so I could bolt them in.

Mines a club cab so the only thing I did with the drive shaft was move the carrier bearing support back on 1/4x2 flat stock.

Get the 3 wire plug, center is +12volts with the key on, the front. The front wire is the overdrive ground and the rear wire is the torque converter lock-up ground. I hooked up my overdrive to the original wiring and ran both the lockup and OD wires in to the cab and mounted 2 switches on the dash, one for OD and the other for lockup. Lockup is fully manual while overdrive can be PCM controlled or completely manual.

Thats not a leak, its the external lubrication system.
The "Rattle Box"
93 W250 Silver Club Cab, few tweaks here and there.
John Deere Two Cylinders, too many to list.

Mike
Is the swap really worth the extra money? How did it affect your millage and what kind of tranny are you using.

I have gone back and read more on the forum and see that much has been talked about.

Thank you for the copy and paist on the information.

I will be going to twins very soon so I want to make sure I have a real good transmission. I am looking for the 450-500HP range. I also do allot of drag racing. 20# boost lanches are not out of the question.

The stock tranny I have now could put down 360+ HP when new now I can only plant 300HP to the rear wheels.

It clear on the dyno that the tranny is slipping big time after 3 years of abuse. I don't know how many 360's and tires I have gone through but man let me tell you its been fun.

I am ready to move up and make a name for the truck.

My turbo setup will be very radical. I plan to use a PDR HX-35 w/14cm housing over a S400. I will have a manual waistgate on the maniflod feeding the hot pipe. Here is the kicker. The S400 is going to be mounted were the stock air box use to be and the top turbo will be turned around.

It sounds crazy I have all the weld fittings and tube just have to get to fitting and welding.

will post pictures over the summer to show how things are going.

Lance

TimB's transmission was bought from Harry (formerly with PiersDiesel) He said he gained NOTHING by going to the 47RH.(no hp to tires, to torque, no mileage) Tim's tranny is tight... but I would have to agree that the percentage of slippage wouldn't make that much difference.

Those prices.... you look north of the border from us? Tim's is from up north. As much as I hate to.... mine will be from up north.

Take it easy

Mark

There is very little information about the 1stGEN transmissions from up north.

I need to give them another call to see what can be done.

I would like to keep it close to me but one of my options has me looking all the way to FL...

CumminsPride.. I'm an IDIOT when it comes to trannys.. As everyone can see! I tow/haul HEAVY maybe 3-4 times a month.. How strong is the 518? I've no information abt it, nor heard anything... If it's worthy, you can guarantee urself a swap! But, whats the benefit on ur end??
