Firm/ harsh 1-2 shift in auto

Postby dpuckett » Thu Mar 20, 2008 6:36 pm

I know, I know. I swore off autos in 2001 when I sold my first Cummins truck, after it ate about 3 TPSs.

I have recently acquired a 2 owner W250 club cab with an auto. The tranny has been rebuilt- exactly when escapes me at the moment- and had a torque convertor installed about 10K ago under warranty. In normal acceleration, it has a pretty firm, almost harsh 1-2 shift. Is this normal with an updated/ upgraded tranny? I'm not against firm shifts, and have never driven a performance auto, but the 1-2 is definitely more noticeable than the 2-3 or 3-4, which are more normal. Am I giong to have to dump some cash into this, or is there some simple adjustment I can do?

Shifts in this are more pronounced than in Mom's local-yokel rebuilt pile.

There's the possibility someone blocked the 1-2 Accumulator, if that is the ony shift that seems harsh.

If the fluid is red.....I would just drive it and see if you can get us to it.
If is dark......you my be repairing the tranny in the near future.

after several months, if you still don't like the shift, order a new spring, drop the valve body and replace the spring with the blocking device presently installed.

Do you know the person that rebuilt it? They might be able to give you some insight on it.
