Getrag from six states...........

Postby dodgetkboy78 » Sat May 17, 2008 11:16 am

They have a pretty good deal on them, like 1200$ for a reman, is it worth it? Or should I rebuild mine myself? My fifth gear is getting stickier, and these trucks had synchro's, not clutchbrakes, so getting it into gear, is becoming harder and harder too.
Should I do mine myself? Is ther all kinds of tricks that I can do that the six states tranny wont do? I'm not scared of manual boxes, I have rebuilt NP's and NV's, and even 18 speeds.
I just don't want to waste the time if I can get a good one for about the same it will cost me. :?

I put about 350 in mine with a rebuilt kit and input shaft.

There is nothing to it. You can and will do everything that they will do to it. They are no smarter than you. Plus you know your transmission, you will know how it looks internally once torn apart etc. Who knows what shape the core was in when it was sent to them, ie the one that they rebuilt and are gonna send to you. You will know NO history on it. You might get one that all they did was slap a new bearing kit in it and or synchros. Your gears might have been in much better shape, along with the speed or roller bearings etc.

I am in no way trying to knock the company you mentioned, I have no experience with them. I just know how easy it is to rebuild a getrag and all the parts that 'the rebuilder/shop' would use in a rebuild, you can easily acquire them yourself etc.

www.zbag.com will have all the bearings, synchros, shims and hard parts if you need any. A bearing and synchro kit from them was about $220.

And it only took Bill 2 years to do his.

Well, It took him 2 years to get it done. I think he only worked on it at SOP. ;)

If you can do an 18speed tranny a 5spd Getrag will be a piece of cake. They are not hard to do, just pay attention and take your time to get it all back together like it came apart. Mainshaft preload (.006-.008") is the most important, along with getting it all CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN!! Whatever you leave in there will still be there when you change the oil again.

I'm working on two of them this week. Shooting for getting my W350 going before I go to ColoSpgs this weekend.

Yeah, im not scared of it, it's just a time thing, got time, no money, got money, no time.
The 18 speed was a bitch, and the first ten speen I did, I had to pull back apart, I timed it wrong.........oops

But I got a better idea, why don't you send me one of your rebuilt ones to test??? ;)
I guess I'll just do like I do everything I work on, get a damn book on it huh?
I'm hoping it will make the summer, but I fear what the gears look like after not having any synchro's for so long.

2 years? LOL, just took about 10 total hours (Friday after work, then half the day Saturday) to help Matt rebuild a 4wd getrag. Took about 35 minutes to disassemble. Then alot of the time was spent working around and fixing a previous owners work  . We have another member of the Getrag Preservation Society 8) .
