i have been noticing some howling type noise in my truck. i think i have isolated it to my transmission. the sound is the worse in reverse. especially when you first shift into it. while on blocks i couldn't make it happen in forward, but while driving down the road (55mph or so) i can make it out.
the tranny itself shifts good up and down has had a recent fluid change. no real delays when going into gear. it dosen't seem as tight when it is cold little more sluggish. could be the fact the whole truck is cold (axles, transfer, motor, ect) anyways im hoping my tranny isn't about to explode. any thoughts???

You didn't say if it was an auto or a stick shift.

From the way you worded it I am thinking it is an auto.

On the recent fluid change did you replace the filter and adjust the bands?

The reason I am asking the higher noise level in reverse sounds like fluid restriction causing the pump to make a singing sound. It is a positive displacement pump. It doesn't like to be starved of fluid an old stopped up filter will cause that.

sorry about that. it is an auto a518. the truck has had a transmission service. but by the previous owner i haven't had it that long. the fluid level is perfect and it is nice and clean with no smell. the noise i hear in reverse is almost a wine. in forward it resembles the sound of a bad bearing?? hard to hear over the sound of the diesel ;)

The only thing in that trans that can whine is the pump assy. Most of the time when they do it is eather a restricted fluid flow problem or the pump it self going bad.

I would drop that pan and replace the filter and adjust the bands to make sure they are done right. If you don't have the spec's speak up and we can post them for you.

i have done a little research about band adjustment. i consider myself fairly mechanically competent i did my 366 spring no prob. so im thinking adjusting bands shouldn't be a big deal. where can i read about band adjustment and operation. what about additives? any good?

here you go

Front band adjustment.

It is located on the outside of the case. It is on the driver side of the trans. It is located about 4" forward of where the shift linkage comes up out of the trans.

Loosen the lock nut about 4 turn or so. Tighten the adjust screw in and torque it to 72 inch pounds. Then back the adjuster screw out 2.5 turns and tighten the lock nut down.

For the rear band.

Remove the trans pan. The adjust bolt is located on the passenger side of the trans by the rear corner. It is in a movable arm. Loosen the adjuster bolt locknut. Torque down the adjustment bolt to 72 inch pounds like the front band. Then back the screw out 2 turns and reset the locknut.

Replace the filter and fluid and go for a test drive.

Now the adjuster bolts are a square head. So a normal socket will not fit unless it is a 4 or 8 point. Most people do not have these. It isn't worth buying one eather. Just use a 1/4" wrench and pull with your little finger. With most people about 72 inch pounds is all your going to pull with that finger.

Mine were 5/16". I bought the $4 socket, and did it by the book. I dont trust my "feelometer" that much except when doing Getrag mainshaft setups, and even then, I need a little guidance.
