727 Tranny help

Postby oldestof11 » Mon Jun 30, 2008 4:34 pm

Ok. I got the tranny hooked up to the driveshaft and the engine. Engine idling I put in about 8-9 quarts of ATF. Put it in Neutral to let it slosh around some more. Check the ATF, normal. Put it into Drive and Reverse, nothing. No movement whatsoever. Could this be from the lack of a TV cable, the right rear wheel being locked up, or because the converter might be shot? No load seemed to be on the engine. Increased RPM's dramatically but nothing.

Anything?

If all the tranny fluid was drained out of the tranny, tq converter, and cooler it will need more tranny fluid.

How long did you allow it to circulate while in neutral?

Did you install the converter properly ???

Did it spline in three steps when you installed it????

If it didn't you might have taken the ears off the pump.

Ok, I remember that it went on 2 times.....

The circulation was about 5 mins in neutral.

I know it needs more fluid, it just wont suck up anymore....

Only 2 steps doesn't sound good. It should have been 3 steps.

The 3rd step is the one that engages the pump drive tangs.

When you bolted everything to gether how far did the converter come forward to touch the flex plate??? It should have moved around 1" or so to touch the flex plate.

About .5" Philip..... Where the bolts just barely touched the TC.

Is it the TC or tranny?

I think you took the ears off the pump assy. They can stand a lot of turning force. They are brittle to any force applied other than turning.

Was this trans a rebuilt or a used take out??

On another note.....

I was offered $300 dollars (plus the gas to get it @ $100-$200) for another take out but it is a 4x4 727. Could that money be better spent on upgrading a 700R4 to with stand the cummins? I like the fact that 1) I have one lying around in very good condition, 2) it has lock up, and 3) it is a OD tranny. So lets see, OD+Lock-up+3.07+265/70/R16+a low 1st gear= LOTS OF FUN!!! :D

Just thinking.

It will take more money to make a 700R4 to holdup. Plus the engine adapters will run you around 500 or so from what I have seen around ebay.

The 4x4 727 would need torn down completely to change the output shaft for your 2WD setup.

The cheapest way out would be to rebuild the trans you have now or pickup a good 47Rh if you can find one.

Used take out? Is there any kind of warranty?
Or, pull it back out, and see if the ears are broke. Simple things first. ;)
