47RE to a NP205

Postby Old-Fart-Al » Fri Aug 08, 2008 7:30 pm

Hi guys, new member and first post here.

I just bought my second 1st Gen W350 a week ago and could use a few questions answered.
The first W350 I had was a 93 with a Getrag and the newly purchased unit is a 90 with the 727, 3.07s and the Np205. I want to install a 4 spd OD with the lock-up TC and have rounded up a guy that has a 10-K mile 95 47RE and all the stuff to do the swap (tranny, adaptor, flex plate, TC, 4X4 tail-shaft housing, ect.). I've read through alot of the old posts and they have been a great help. He wants $600.00 for everything, which I believe is a heck of a deal. I'ld like to know what you all think.
Is the 47RE the best to aquire for what I want or are there better choices?
Next is, will the NP205 in the 90 mate-up to the 47RE or will I need the NP205 from a 1st Gen Getrag 4X4 (input bearing size, shaft spline count, ect.)?
Truck has 92,000 original miles, the bed looks like it was never used and the interior is like new. I'ld like to build it right and restore it to it's former glory (with a few modifications).
If you guys have any suggestions and advice, I'ld definitly appreciate it.

The Dodge auto's used the same small input shaft on the transfer case. So that isn't a problem there.

The probelm is a RE transmission. It is an electronic trans. You need the RH trans which is a hydrolic trans. Look at the plug going into the trans. If it is a 3 wire plug that makes it a 47RH. A 95 should be the RH model.

Thanks Philip for the shout.

The guy says it's out of a 95 and an RE model. Probably doesn't know what it is and is just guessing. I did ask him if it had the three wire plug, he checked it and said it did.
Is the 47RH designation on the data tag or some other spot on the tranny?
Is there anything else I can check for on the unit to ensure it is the 47RH?

If it has a 3 wire plug its a 47RH. I can't remember how many wires a RE has. I am thinking its 7 or 8 on that plug. Plus its a round plug if I remember right.

There is no data tag on a Dodge trans. Its a line of numbers stamped above the pan rail on the driver side, just below the shift linkage. Unless you know someone that works at the transmission plant the numbers mean very little. Even places that supply trans parts never ask for those numbers.

Thanks for the info guys.
I'll check with him again tonite to double check and make sure of just exactly what he's got (3 wire or 10) before I make the trip to get it.

Thanks again, have a great weekend guys.

3 wire plug socket on the transmission and it's white on the RH. The 96 and up plug socket is black, and there are other identifiers on these later years such as case castings etc.

Sun Coast has an identifier pictoral, go to the Dodge diesel transmissions and scroll down to it.

Use the 47RE out of the 96 and use the overdrive section off your transmission to make a 47RH out of it.

i have called 50 + places in the last two days and the best i could come up with is two trannys sitting in the USA. They both want 1500 for them, both are condition unknow, and shipping is 1000 to 1200 bucks.

So im going to have 2500 dallors in to the tranny before i have even rebiult it. :(

So im going to stick with the a518 unless some mirical happens.

Joel, how far are you from Michigan? There is a good RE out of a 98 on craigslist.org for 600. You would still need the adapter and starter though.
