Upgraded Gear Sets for Getrag

Postby whereswaldo250 » Thu Sep 04, 2008 9:00 pm

The title says it all. Are there any performance shaft upgrades or gear sets for a getrag?

I know that there are some for the NV4500, just wondering.

not that i know of... like you said, i have only seen them for the nv4500... the getrag is kind of a worthless tranny for high power or race apps...

I'll agree that the Getrag isnt for race applications- it requires too slow shifting. But, it will hold up to 12-1300ft-lbs of torque measured at the wheels. So the "....worthless tranny for high power...." isnt really accurate, now is it? It just has to be used wisely and not jamming things like a kid in some weenie-mobile sports car.

I was thinking when the time comes to rebuild it I figured there must be some little upgrades that I could do. Sounds like the only upgrade is a NV4500

When I got my 92, four years ago, I was grouchy about the getrag. It was noisy, and sloppy, and the synchro's didn't work.

Four years, and like 130,000 miles later, it is the exact same, except for the synchro's have came back enough that I can shift halfway smoothly. The truck has plenty of power, pulls 38 pounds of boost until the pyro buries and I let off, and runs around with 10,000+ behind it on a regular basis.
My opinion of the getrag, is that you have to be smarter than the transmission you are driving, because, they are TOUGH!!!!!!!!!!

Wanna shift fast? Keep the getrag, and install a exhaust brake.

Not sure how much of an upgrade the NV4500 is. I have driven a few of them in 2ndGens, and they are not near as crisp in the shifting as the Getrags, and of course, there is the whole issue of half the OD gears not being inside the case. Aluminum tail housings, I could go on.

The Driver is the Wildcard

To somebody who knows how to drive a stick, it's "crisp."

To somebody who doesn't, it's stabbin' the clutch, rowin' the shifter and grinding the gears.

So naturally, stupid logic comes into play and the "newer is better" thought process takes over. Several gallons of liquid gold, a couple of 5th gears and a few grand later, they wonder what happened.

I would like to know how ppl think a nv4500 is an upgrade when you have to put in a bigger input shaft after hitting 500hp otherwise you break it off when I know theres guys on here hitting 500-600hp and more and still doing it with a stock getrag tranny if that doesnt show toughness I dont know what does I have both the nv4500 and the getrag ( have 5 dodges now and have had over 16 now) since 94 and if I was wanting it for power purposes it would have to be the getrag
