Question about 518 internals and upgrades

Postby VEfreak » Sun Sep 07, 2008 9:35 am

Well, it's almost time to redo the tranny, since it's going downhill fast and it's my daily driver, so i got some questions.

First off, i've heard the internals of a 518 and 727 are exactly the same, so does this mean that THIS(VVV) powerpack from PATC will work for me

#PP5. This Power Pack comes with our #8D6 5 clutch direct drum (not for 48RE). Replaces 3 or 4 clutches with 7 Red Eagle clutches and Kolene steels for a 75% to133% increase in clutch apply area. You get 7 Red clutches #28742, 7 Kolene steels #28701K, 2 selective steels #28701K216, 1 drum #8D6 and 1 #8FBP special backing plate. Add the #5X drum to the PP5 power pack for $136.00. Fits all 727 to 47RE transmissions. Cost $549.00

Does anyone have any experience with the PATC converters? Only 399 for one from them. I'm assuming they are just a reworked stocker, maybe with some extra fins put in.

Is it worth it to rebuild it with 6 pinion steel front and rear planetaries?

Can anyone give me any other suggestions on parts. I can't afford any billet shafts or anything. So far my plan is torque converter, upgrade the drum so i can add more clutches and steels. Full rebuild kit, and shift kit, kevlar bands, and maybe steel planetaries. Oh yeah, and a bypass valve.

Also, would it be worth it to get the Torington bearing kit for my tranny?

Any other ideas and a reason for em is welcome, thanks.

VE Freak

You have lots of good questions. I would just like to suggest a guy that can answer all your questions.

His name is Mark he built my transmision a couple months ago. A lot of what you are asking was done to my transmision.

Here are some pictures and his phone number. Please try and call him later in the day as he has a day job and works on transmisions on his spair time.

Thanks. I actually might be picking up a five speed change over this weekend for 800 dollars. If that doesn't pan out then i'll definitely give your guy mark a call. And does anyone know, if i change from my auto to this getrag five speed i might get, is there any drive shaft length issues or crossmember issues?

I had a thought today, a revelation if you will, THIS IS A NON LOCK UP TRANSMISSION!!! I have to rebuild it since this is my daily driver, I'm short on cash so i can't really buy a 46rh and get a torque conveter and shift kit for that right now. But i need to get it running good and right, and make it last a little. so I'll get a torque converter, red alto clutches and steels so i can put 5 in instead of the stock four, a and a rebuild kit. I already have a shift kit. I also have a very reputable tranny man who will rebuild my tranny and install these parts for 300 bucks. That way the tranny will run until i save up the money buy buy and upgrade a lock up auto. And yes i want an auto, i like how it holds boost between gears.
