old tranny....will it live?

Postby boomer » Sat Sep 13, 2008 11:19 pm

I got a 93 5.9 intercooled...club cab...original tranny...don't know but stock I believe.

I've only had it serviced once....and it was good...

it has a cooler mounted under the driver side bed...with a LOT of hose leading to it.

it comes on under load...fan cools the tranny fluid

My ? is...I got 200K plus on this guy.

Can I expect failure soon?....or are these trannies tough....can they go 300K?....or am I dreaming?

thanks

With a working under-bed cooler, regular service and a stock engine, I wouldn't worry about it.

Mom had hers redone at 270K, and it had towed for 180K of its life, WITHOUT the under-bed cooler. If you take care of yours, and it isnt doing anything funny, it should be ok.

There does get to be a point that the internals just wear out beyond the point of no return. Whem Mom got hers redone, it still had good looking fluid, and had never been hot. It had about a 2200rpm stall speed, and shifting was getting real slushy, even for a stock tranny.

It totally depends on its life. I can and have blown up fresh rebuilt stuff. If it has been abused than you never know. One of my 89's had 234,000 miles when it broke. The band for reverse had snapped so it would not go backwards. My other 89 had a new tranny when it had 70,000 on it. It was with the original owner then and he did it because he felt the tranny do a weird shift once. He used it for cross country trips with his 5th wheel so he did not want it to leave him beside the road. I know when I plowed with my 89 I absolutly had to use low range because the tranny would just fry in high range. I had it boil out the dipstick once when I first got the truck because I was in a tight spot in high range 4 . Low range after that for me.
