Gasser and Diesel tranny question

Postby RSWORDS » Sat Sep 27, 2008 12:23 pm

What is the internal difference between a diesel 727 and a gasser 727? Cold yuo get a 727 from a dragracer say and put it into your truck easily?

I don't know for sure, but the diesel and motorhome 727s probably have a 4-pinion planetary, lower 1st gear, more clutches, etc.

I'm not that well versed on the transmissions, never even been inside one.

I don't know much but will try. The case is different, the valve body must be different due to low rpm shifts compared to gassers. Philip help me out here.

The reason I'm asking is I have a guy on my tool route that has a spare 727 out his drag car. VERY built and he will let it go cheap.

Differences are the casing (diesel is stronger and has more meat on it) and the internal governor for the gear changing it different.....

THat is all I know.

If you go full manual valve body two questions....

1. Can you use one from a gasser? Is the difference from the gasser to the diesel just the shift points and how it is set up? Wont a full manual do away with all this?

2. Wont a full manual ZVB do away with the govoner or at least the function.... Not that it matters we can just leave the stock on in.

the shift points are based off of the kickdown cable and tv cable adjustment. i can take a gas trans and make it shift at 1500 rpm if you want me to. its not the VB or anything. At the most you may have more clutches STOCK in a diesel vs. gas one or a steel planetary insteand of alum. hope that helps and good luck.

All 727s have had the same ratio plannetaries since inception in 1962. The case is unique to the cummins, The only other difference between it and a heavy duty gasser is extra heavy governor weights, larger teeth but less of them on the pump rotors, and on the early cummins trans a larger drilled lube passage in the pump casting. After a while they got tired of keeping track of 2 pump part # they just drilled them all out. I'd have to look up the exact date but at a certain point in time they quit making the 3 pinion front carriers and just built them all with 4 pinion, cept for cummins tranny 5 pin aluminum front carrier, untill the 47rh-618 came out which had the 5 pinion steel.

RS, the full manual vb will not use the governor to contol shifts but you will get tired of fishing around with the column mounted stick on every shift, now the antique cable shift (push button) 727s were more fun when used with full manual vb.

So the general consesus is that I can take all the good stuff out the gasser drag tranny and swap them into the diesel case. And I can use the gasser manual VB in my diesel tranny.
