Clutch Price

Postby whereswaldo250 » Fri Jan 05, 2007 8:30 am

My clutch on my getrag is starting to make alot of noise when I push it in. I brought it to a transmission place and they said that it would cost between 600-700 for an oem clutch instal. Does that sound about right ?

The OEM 13" Sachs clutch is very expensive. Depending on your ultimate power goal and use there are many other options that would probably be better.

Whatever you do, do not let them talk you into a 12" clutch. 12" clutches are junk behind a Cummins. Get the Sachs, I think SBC has them for around $450.

Thanks for the insight. That price doesn't sound half bad but I do not have the jacks to support the ole rag

I don't know the exact weight of the Getrag but I just installed a clutch and 200 lbs. of NV4500 5 speed without any problems at all.

Working under less than ideal conditions; sheet of plywood on slightly sloped ground, small el cheapo floor jack and working alone. I fabbed up a square channel plate to bolt to floor jack with a center pivot and screw adjustments front/rear, and chained the tranny to it with adjustable turnbuckles. It's Rube Goldberg for sure but it worked fine and was surprisingly easy.

The main thing is having the tranny securely chained to the jack so it won't do weird things right when you don't want it to...

I have a 13" clutch disk that I use for all the single disk clutches I build. I is available in organic for smooth 300rwhp or less use and a button for the higher powered crowd. The button is what I have in old yellow. I do not know if it would work with a stock sachs cover though as I have always used a 2nd gen flywheel and a finger clutch cover with it. If you can get ahold of a 2nd gen flywheel and know a machinist the clutch can be built very cheaply. 8)

The cheapest route is to get a NV4500 truck flywheel, then you need to have 8 holes drilled and tapped in it to mount the 13" clutch cover, from there it is a direct install. The other option is to use a 6spd flywheel. The 6spd flywheel already has the right bolt pattern, but you have to have the starter spacer from the 6spd truck to make the starter and flywheel compatible. Chrysler wants some outrageous amount for the starter spacer and special bolts that hold it on so I dont recommend that route. The pleate load on the clutch can be set anwhere from 2000 to 4000lbs depending on your application and how hard you mind pushing on the clutch pedal. Mine is at 4000lb with the button disk and the dash creaks alot when I push the clutch in. It holds 600+rwhp and 1300+ torgue in a 7000+lb truck though. :P

When I replaced the clutch in mine I went to Fleetpride. It cost me $250 for the clutch, pressure plate, and both bearings. Stock replacement.

Ptoombs, Was it the cast iron cover Sachs or the stamped steel Luk?
Oh and Swank I am checking on it as soon as my clutch guy gets back to me i will let you know, but I suspect the same setup as what I have will run about $750-$850 including the flywheel.

Jeez KTA, I don't have a clue. I did it about 5 years ago and don't think I have the receipt. I think it was stamped though.

That sounds like the right kind of money for the LUK, and it is the recomended replacment for the OEM Sachs, if you get a clutch from Dodge for a 1 gen that will be what you get, well that and the shaft. LOL
