what broke?

Postby skilletky » Tue Oct 28, 2008 3:28 pm

monday i was leaving the house, i pulled out of the driveway, then put the peddle to the floor. as soon as it built boost, something in the trans went pop and it was done. i just pulled the trans out. i pulled the converter off and tried to turn the input shaft and it will not budge. i put a pipe wrench on it and it still would not budge. any one have a clue what the problem is?

my guess from that description is probably an intermediate shaft broke and is locking it up. off the top of my head i cant think of anything else that SHOULD lock it up like that. not sayin nothin else can im just slow right now.

Blasted a pinion carrier assembly most likely. They are made of alumin.

oh ya, good one Philip, i didnt think of that.

honestly i would just take it someone and rebuild it. i wouldnt waste all the money on an ats unless you plan on throwing down some serious numbers with truck.

Honestly, i wouldnt waste the money buying an ATS. I would just take it to a guy that knows mopar transmissions good. Unless you plan on puttin down some serious HP numbers with the truck (and be realistic) then i wouldnt bother wasteing the money on ats.

Well at the stage your at right now. I would find something with a lockup converter. A 47RH is the model your looking for.

The rebuild prices will run almost the same between the two trans. If your going to rebuild a trans. Get one with a lockup converter to rebuild.

i have doing some thinking and searching, and i think i have decided to get a suncoast set up with billit shafts and what not. i was talking with the guy from ats, and asked him about a 47rh and he said i would need a stand alone controller and it would be a lot more expensive. but i dont know much about automatics or the difference in the models.

You do not need a stand alone controller for a 47RH. It is a hydrolic trans just like your 518. You can use your orginal wire for the OD control and then there are a couple of ways to controll lockup of the converter.

You would need a 2nd gen engine adapter and starter for the 47RH trans. The converter is longer than a nonlockup converter.

If the guy at ATS doesn't know a 47RH that then he should be fired.

i think the guy i talked to was in a hurry to get off the phone. he was really unhelpful and pretty much much pissed me off, so i decided to go to suncoast. any way, i i should have my new trans and converter and all that in a few weeks. i thank yall for the help. now maybe i can put the truck on a dyno and put down a decent time at the track.

I bet he realized you were not going to buy a 5K trans from him and didn't want to work to get your money.
