Torque Converter

Postby Flanra » Wed Feb 07, 2007 8:50 pm

Who makes a good torque converter for the 727 trans? or is getting a better torque converter like putting a bandage on my trans... get more power to the ground now but have a pile of parts in a year or so?

If it were me, I'd call Dave Goerend in St Lucas Iowa. He makes his own convertors in house, and would probaly build anything you want. The rest of the trans can be built to handle anything you want. I think it would be worth the time at least to investigate what it would cost to put in new clutches, and a performance valve body. Depending on power level, and your objectives, maybe even some billet shafts.

Yeah i def. want to look into saving the 727 from what i have heard its a good transmission... My mods that I want to do are, pods, a bigger turbo maybe a hx-40 or something from high tech turbo, some more pump mods, and a intercooler... so nothing too extreme... I think the 727 will be good for that, does dave have a website i could check out? or is there any other websites i could find parts for my tranny?

If your sure the insides are good than a good converter and valve body kit is all you need. Dave deffinently has his stuff right and would be a good one to talk to. I just had my 96's trans done with his parts, night and day difference.

Dave's has a real nice converter. I can't comment on the non-lockup units, but the one I have in my 47RH is awesome. He also recommended I do a few other things while I had my trans down, billet apply lever with his valve body.

You will want to know what direction you want to go. Turbo size will affect the way Dave wants to set up the convertor. My buddy took his twin turbo 24 valve up there and Dave pulled the trans 3 times and tried 3 different convertor setups until he(Dave) was satisfied with the performance of the truck as a package.

If you put a very tight low rpm convertor with a large turbo, spool up will be poor and it will feel doggy, but a small charger with a higher stall convertor will be very spunky off the line but out of breath quick. Do you understand what I mean? Dave will make sure your happy if you can supply him with more information about your HP goals, turbo size/charachteristics, etc....

Yeah, I think i might just want to do my engine mods first before i think about the trans... get the engine to sorta where i want it, then talk to him and see what he has to say about the trans. or maybe build the trans first and work around it?
