Getrag bearings

Postby bgilbert » Sun Dec 14, 2008 4:58 pm

Matt and I just went through another getrag, a 'customers' 8) tranny. Within the Zbag.com bearing kit there was a new addition, instead of only Koyo bearings, there were NSK bearings, along with a single Koyo bearing. Both made in Japan though. Maybe just a new name on the same bearing?

Plus we found made in Germany bearings in the tranny. I was thinking Koyo was the only bearing available or made.

The rebuild went well and back together pretty easily. It was a 300k mile getrag with at least one 'rebuild'. It had one of two blocker rings replaced, and a couple of the synchro rings were replaced at one time as well. The hard parts looked excellent but the synchro rings were SHOT.

I think the syncros always seem to wear faster is people running motor oil in them. I know that was the OEM spec'd fluid at the time, but that was also before good syncromesh fluids were widely available.

The 2 trannies I did this spring were the NSK bearings, from ZBAG as well. Seems to have held up so far, though mine only has about 6K on it.

This tranny had gear lube 80/90 run in it most of it's life.

Gear lube would be even worse for the synchros than motor oil, not to mention starving the bearings.

Right after rebuild, I suggest using an inexpensive 5w30 or 10w30 engine oil for breakin. Drain that after 200-500 miles and replace with 5w30 synthetic engine oil.

If you want the syncros to last, use a synchromesh fluid.

What Ace said or some Redline MTL.
Shifts smoother, faster and is quieter than 5w30, 10w30 and 10w40 synthetics that I have used.
