getrag rebuild.

Postby mprmn08 » Sun Jan 25, 2009 5:45 pm

how many of you guys have rebuilt your own getrag? Is there anything special i need to look out for in them that might come flying off or something. i've rebuild some manuals but never a getrag so i do have a decent understanding of them. also could you list any important torque specs and possibly a blown up diagram of the internals if anybody has one. thanks

pic up a 93 service manual, they have the getrag rebuild stuff in em iirc. you can order em from geno's, or do like i did and borrow it from your local dealer...returning it is optional (i didnt!)

Nothing will come flying out til you try to rebuild the shifter top.

The rebuild itself is straightforward. No real torque specs, but bearing preload is crucial- too loose or tight by a few thousandths, and you will be in it again in short order.

so does anyone know what the preload specs are for it. im familiar with manuals so im not worried about the process so i dont really wanna go buy the manual just for preload specs. any info on it would be great thanks guys.

could someone school me on the gearing order of a getrag. from front to back is is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, reverse, 5th? or is it 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, revers, 1st? the reason i ask is it looks like the gear in the back is smaller then the front gear. and if i remember correctly a smaller gear driving a bigger gear is more torquey so thats why i was wondering. thanks for any info.

From front to back it goes 3rd,2nd,1st,Reverse,5th

There is no 4th gear it just locks the input to the mainshaft :D

I'm having some getrag trouble myself with Dad's truck and this is the first manual i've tore into it seems pretty simple so if I can figure out how it works you should have no problem

If I can't figure out how somthing works it's usually PFM Pure Friggin Magic

ok 2 questions. i started actually tearing into the getrag heavy today and if theres no gear for 4th why does mine have 6 gears on the input/output shaft? secondly how the HELL does the input shaft come out. i cannot get mine out to take the rest out. and to me it looks like it has to come out through the top because the syncrho ring behind the gear is larger then the hole in the front of the case. PLEASE help i would like to get it tore apart today. thanks

The flat spot on the syncro ring has to face the countershaft when you pull it apart

Yep, I had my getrag out a few times in short order, until I got it right. Even after buying parts a couple times, I spent way less then getting a reman, a NV4500 conversion, or having it rebuilt. I had a pretty good writeup going around here about it.

well 2 problems have risin during the rebuild. 1. I found a crack in the case (small) on the front behind the front bearing retainer. luckily i know a guy who is a really REALLY good cast iron welder and he's goin to fix it for me. but the 2nd is on the 3/2 syncro assem. there is the 3 "teeth" lookin deals (not sure there technical name) that go between the inner ring and outer ring along with a spring and detent ball in each. Well my problem is that im missing one set. I dont see how it could have popped out so im guessing the place the previous owner got the remaned trans didnt have it in. So my guestion is does anyone have a set (teeth, spring, and detent ball) that they will part with or is that a dealer item and do i have to buy the whole syncro assembly? thanks for anything
