How they work, how they don't work, and how to fix them

There is an aftermarket 3.90 gearset that yukon is supposedly re-releasing. That wasn't a factory available ratio. They will be producing 4.10's as well.

The factory ratios are 4.10, 4.57, 5.14, 5.63

I believe the 5.63's were 1963 C30 w/3 speed manual only. I've never seen a set FWIW.

The pinion bearing is very exotic in design and likewise in cost to replace. It's total overkill and weighs in at 6 LBS! Modern bearings are commonly available as are all the gaskets and seals, brake shoes and wheel cylinders are now offered new. Wheel cylinders are 1 1/8" by the way.

The housing is 3/8" thick steel an 5/8" where the third and rear cover bolt on!

The axle has been slang termed an HO72 or eaton. Technically it's the GM 7200 LB axle. It is the father of the 14 bolt and there is some parts interchange ability between them. For reference the dana 70 is 6400 LB capacity.

Hopefully this works....

In the Dana 80's the spider gears are the weakest link in the lockers. Once you fix that the axles are next. What diameter and what splines are the axles? Hopefully they aren't a coarse spline like that pinion.

Jeff shouldn't have any spider gear issues as he has a 14b minispool and 1.5" 30spl 14b axles in this axle. The original HO72 axleshafts are a coarse 17 spline

Were just kind of experimenting with this axle to see how well it will hold up in a High hp High torque diesel application. The benifits outweigh the risks and it is a cheap alternitive to a D80. D80's are hard to come by in this part of the country and are really expensive

That's why I eliminated the spiders altogether. Hopefully, it will stay together for a while.

I would have love to run an 80 from a 450 super duty, or a big 110? spicer from the 4500/5500 dodge or sterling, but the 10 lug hubs won't pass tech around here, they're 1.5 ton stuff. I keep looking for a decent buy on one, I was hoping I could machine up some new 8 lug hubs with different bearings and rework the axle flanges with a laser cutter.

I would like a little more info on where to get parts for this axle I have one that was just pulled out of a 67 chevy 1ton and I was told that you have to shave some of the 14b parts to make them fit? didnt know if this was true

If the axles are 30 spline like a normal 10.5" 14 bold I dont see it holding up well. I decent bigblock in my mud/rock crawler snaps the factory axles and has twisted a few yukons so I imagine pulling with the torque of a cummins might have the same effect. It looks like a killer rear if some better axles were available.

You rock crawlers could break anything

Seriously the axles are the same size? spline as the AAM 11.5 14 bolt used behind duramaxes. They do fairly well sled pulling on those shafts. So most likely you'd break them too and the ones in the dana 80.

I will just have some CTMs made up if shaft breakage is a problem.

I have seen some 35 spline upgrades for 10.5 14b's. I think dynatrac made some as well as randy's r&p.
