727 to getrag Conversion?

Postby Flanra » Sat Mar 10, 2007 8:03 am

Ok after researching what all I can do to my 727, I think for the same price I could just get a rebuilt getrag and install it.. But how hard is it to convert the truck over? will my transfercase bolt up and will my driveshafts be the same length? or will a conversion be a total Pain, and It would be better off for me to buy a new truck with a manual transmission? I tried to research this conversion but it does not look like many convert to a getrag... seeing on how I am on a tight budget and the getrag seems like a good tranny if you treat it right I think it might be worth doing...

Thankyou

You auto has a different output spline count than a getrag. So you would need a case from a getrag setup or have your transfer case machined to accept the larger bearing the getrag output spline takes.

I thought about doing this one time. I had a good NV4500 setting in the garage. By the time I got the rest of the parts gathered up. I could rebuild my auto at least 2 times. So the 4500 found a new home.

If you look long enough you should be able to find a good running rusted out donor truck here in western Pa for less than $2500. Then sell the left over parts that you don't want.

Yeah, I would definatly consider doing that, but we don't have a garage or the yard space at my new house for a project like that :( My one buddy who lives in North Sewickley is selling his 91' 1st gen with a getrag for $4,500 OBO it got around 200k I think... it does have fresh paint though, well untill he decided to four wheel it :x
