When do I need billet shafts?

I hear the second and third gen guys talking about billet shafts all the time, but it doesn't come up amongst us much...

What power level do you start to need billet shafts at? Above 400 hp? 500?
1990 D-250 Regular Cab: Tweaked injection pump, built transmission, a cataclysmic charlie foxtrot of electronics, the most intense street-ran water injection system in the country, and some more unique stuff.

well, i ain't trying to be funny with this but you wont need one until you break the old one. it will vary with horsepower and how well you hook up. it seems to me that as soft as our trucks leave, the shaft should be ok for a while. just dont do any neutral drops :shock: .

hers- 93 d250 auto 3.54- pump mods only
ours- 93 w350 dually, auto, 3.54. stock for now
parts 93 d350 auto, 92 d250 auto.

Don't worry about breaking any shafts. With our slipper converters it will not be a problem.

Another thing to remember the shaft they break the most is the main shaft. On a trans with lockup this is a hollow shaft to supply oil for the lockup function. The mainshaft on a 727/518 is solid round stock. The rest of the items they break are caused by using lockup in all gears with high horse power that we can't make or can't afford to make. :lol: :lol:

So is the entire "billet shafts" thing another discussion that isn't germane to non-lock-up transmissions?


I'm getting a tighter Goerend's TC installed this weekend... When input shafts break, can't they frag the TC and play havoc other tranny internals?

I have only heard of one main shaft breaking in a 1st gen. But the guy was trying a 20 PSI launch. If he hadn't broken the mainshaft he most likely have trashed the sun gear assy.

If you want to play big time drag racer you can destory about any moving part in a torqueflight with high boost launches. The same applys to stick shifts. High RPM launch can be expensive. Only with the stick you won't launch with any boost or very little.
