Fix for sloppy shifter.

Postby Rebel Ram » Wed Apr 25, 2007 6:26 pm

After my rebuild I was jazzed at how my 360 was performing but still bummed at how it shifted. Before the rebuild I thought that the sloppy shifter was due to worn mechanical parts in the trans lid. But as it turns out it is the cheezy rubber sleeve joint at the bottom of the shift lever. What I did to fix it was to take some 1"X1"X3/16" angle and cut two pieces 1" long. Weld them back to back to make a tube. Slip this over the square portion of the shifter and tack weld in place. Drill and tap two of the flat sides of one of the angle with a 1/4-20 tap. Take some strips of steel banding material and slip between the rubber and the shifter tube on the flats where the D&T holes are. Now reinstall the shift lever and thread some short bolts into the angles to tighten up the joint.

I'm trying to follow what your doing here because my shifter has some serious slop in it. I'm pretty sure its in the top though, the shift rails seem a bit worn and the 1-2 seems kinda loose in there. Anyway, you lost me on the rubber part, there is supposed to be a rubber piece in there somewhere? I don't have rubber anything on the shifter of my Getrag?

It sounds like what Rebel Ram is talking about is the threaded part of the shifter. There is the piece that rides in the top of the transmission tower and then an extension which threads on to it (and brings the shift handle up to a usable height). The shift handle has a rubber gasket inside of it, probably to reduce noise transmitted up the shift handle from the trans.
