91 1/2 cummins wont charge

Postby squarecummins91 » Mon May 03, 2010 7:39 pm

Hey guys, Im a new one on here, I was sent over from Moparts. I bought a 91 cummins truck for 2500 bucks. Its got a few lil issues. Its got 190k on it, but its in great shape really. NO RUST!, any ways. Im a tech, I have worked on a lot of cummins, and I think I know whats wrong, but I was told you guys are really good with the old dodges. I tested the altornator, its putting out 14.8-15 volts depending on mt dumb guy guage on the machine. I did buy a new voltage regulator but havent gotten to my farm to try it. I was told I can eliminate the computer, and wire it up just like my 71 demon. nice and simple. Someone also told me that the crank sensor could be the culprit, I honestly didnt think this old of one had a crank sensor. Its got an intercooler its got a 4 speed, and its got criuse. I do plan on plugging the killer dowel pin issue, and I need to repaire the 4x4 output yoke on the t case. I rebuilt the front driveshaft, and put a front axle u-joint in it. I plan on serviceing the entire truck. Its got the typical bad tensioner bushing, so I bought a new one from cummins, its got a crank seal leaking, not bad, ill take care of that soon.

Im just mainly concerned about my charging problem. I relly dont want to buy a new computer because I know there isnt any NOS ones, and I dont want to spend the money on a carquest reman that will chunk in 6 months.

So any help would be great.

The 91's don't have a crank sensor. 92-93 have crank sensors. Also I don't think the computer has anything to do with the charging on 91's. 92-93 the voltage regulator in the computer. Have you checked the grounds, they are heavy enough anyway.

Well I have cleaned a few things, and have found a few chewed on wires, but nothing yet. Im thinkin of "fullfielding" the altornator which should be easy to do.

Well I got the voltage regulator hooked up, and at first it was charging about15.2 then the battery got leveled off, and now its 13.8-14.2ish. :D Im glad it wasnt anything major, I was worried at first. What does the computer control on a 91? Teanny?, Cruise?, Guages?, my oil psi guage dosnt read, but I have psi. Might be a guage or a sender. The red oil light goes out, but no guage readings.

Thanks guys

Not sure what the 'puter on a 91 does run, I never played with one. The oil pressure senders on these are known to be junky too. Just ground the wire and see if the guage goes up. I'm sure it's the sender though. ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.
