External regulator

Postby Remps » Mon Aug 15, 2011 2:10 pm

Had to go to an external regulator on my 93, got it charging now, but it seems to be charging a little high on the gauge. Also the check engine light comes on after running for a few minutes. Is there a way to make the check engine light stay off? I also have 12V power to the regulator straight off the battery, and I've read that some have had power drainage issues hooking straight to the battery. I just got it installed, so I guess I will know the answer to my last question tmo, lol.

Pull the code from the computer that's causing the C/E light to trip.
To pull the code, cycle the key on-off 3 times, leaving it on the 3rd time.
Once the initial dash light tests are done on the 3rd cycle, then the check engine light will flash a sequence of times, pause, then flash again.
Watch the pauses closely.

That code (or codes) will tell what system is actually tripping the C/E light.

I have good used ECMs for manual and auto in '92 or '93 trucks.

Thats good info on the computer codes, I will have to try that. Guessin I can just google what the codes are. Hooking the regulator to the battery drained it, so I will hook it to an ignition hotwire. I do have another ecm in my parts truck, 3 hrs away. When I get it, I'll leave the external regulator in the truck as a backup system.
