Neutral saftey switch?

Postby cmann250 » Sun Sep 11, 2011 5:29 pm

Starting recently, my truck won't start unless i slam it into park after it's been shut off. Nothing stupid, i just have to take it out of park and put it in park again.

If i'm thinking correctly, the neutral safety switch is going bad and i'd like to catch it before it completely retires from active duty. Because of course, that would be at the most inconvient time  Or could whatever activates the switch just be out of whack?

Sounds to me Your shift linkage is just out of adjustment. Check the shift lever on the trans and see if its loose.

Ok thanks, that's one of my suspects. I'm tired of throwing money at this thing on a whim

Yep check the adjustment rod with the spring were the rod connects at the steering column under the hood on the drivers side.

Mine would have problems starting unless i jiggled the bar that moves when you turn the key on the side of column (opposite of key). The other bar is for the head lights. Turns out the switch (dont remember the name but the one in the dash behind steering column) was only zipped tied for one of the nuts. Replaced the zip tie with a nut and bolt and starts right up. Where that switch is I bet it was more hassle getting a zip tie in that tight area. I think they say the switch is notorious for going bad. I have even read of someone being on their third switch.
