Headlight wiring?

Postby Remps » Thu Dec 30, 2010 11:23 am

I recently direct wired full battery power to the heater fan, with a toggle switch, to get the fan to spin faster. I'd guess it spins 15-20% faster with full power. My question is, do the headlights recieve full power? Or could I get more light with direct power from the battery? The more toggle switches I got, the better it is!

Yup. You could also fire a relay from the headlight switch and get full power that way. On my 92 I have already put relays on stop, turn, tail, back up lights to the rear. I did this because I tow some and need the extra power for extra lights. It also keeps from burning the factory harness and switch up. I have 2 more relays mounted for the headlights ( high and low beam ) but have yet to finish the wires.

I've got my headlights on relays and yes the plane jane lights do get brighter. I had to put the relays in becuase of the silver star headlights I had installed drawed more amps and got the switch hot fast.

Would a 50 amp toggle switch be sufficent?

50 amps would run everything but the starter. :D

That would have the potential to burn the truck to the ground if the circuit isn't fused properly.

So I should run xx fuse in between battery and toggle switch, or in between toggle switch and headlights? My fuel pump, gauges, and heater should be fused as well then? Sorry, I suck at wiring.

YES, between battery and toggle switch. Get one of those weather proof in line blade types that have the flip top lid. Mount it about a foot back from the battery to eliminate the corrosive battery fumes. I usually add a bit of grease on the fuse contact blades. Weather proof the connection leads with a small bit of grease and shrink tube if you have to do a crimp connection.
