1stgen Trailer wiring

Postby pulltilbroke » Sun May 01, 2011 9:23 pm

Well last night I rewired the trailer plug, well actually I started fresh. When I put the new box on a while back I got rid of the old plug and hacked up wiring mess as the PO had hacked into the factory harness and screw everything up. I replaced the factory harness at the back of the truck when I did the box also.

Anywho I got all my stuff from the Local NAPA. They had a nifty little plug in setup for about 20$, This is the same setup my buddy has been using for about a year and a half with no issues. also got a 7 pin plig also that plugs into the end of the harness the connects to the truck. The only thing you gotta do is wire in the Brake,Charge and Backup wires.

Heres the PN# for the stuff I got.

PN 755-1555, This is the setup that plugs in to the truck

PN 755-1842, this is the setup that plugs into the other harness, this is just what I got as there are many options for this end.

Figured this would help some guys that don't want to hack up the factory wiring.

I have used them before. My 93 has that same setup. I also like the combo 7 blade rv style and the standard 4 pin too in the same unit. It makes having different trailers alot easier.

You just need to be careful with those. They work great, but when they go bad you'll tear your hair out trying to find the problem. I've only seen 1 go bad, and it shorted out in the "T" section. When you turned on the signals, brakes and everything else came on. It took me a little while to find the problem, you'd think a sealed connector wouldn't go bad, but it did.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Pete- it could have been made in China, and since it contained metal of some sort, it was, by that virtue alone, junk.

Cant beat a wire stripper and a soldering iron. Wrap it up with some of that liquid brush-on schloopengloppen and you're good to go.
