crank position sensor help

Postby (92)cummins » Sat Oct 01, 2011 5:47 pm

The belt on my 92 w350 ripped off and tore through the wires on the crank position sensor between the sensor and the plug. Im trying to reattach them but all three wires are black and i dont know which one goes where. I know the middle wire goes to the middle of the plug but im afraid to do trial and error with the other two in fear of burning the computer. I need help

Hello,
The wires on mine are 3 in a row and flat. On one side the middle wire has a white stripe. The white stripe at the sensor end on mine is very faint, but in good light you can see it. The same thing happened to my sensor I laid the two pieces down with the stripe up and spliced them together with some new wire in the middle. When I put it back on, I thought that the mounting bracket insured proper placement, but I must have placed it to close. It worked for a couple of days then the alt stopped working. My tach still works. While doing some online research I read that the sensor must be gapped at .050", so I redid my splices with new wire and solder, to make sure the splice was good, reinstalled the sensor, I folded paper until it measured .050" with my caliper and used the paper to set the gap then tightened the bolts. The tach still works, but the alt doesn't, so I think that I damaged the sensor by running it to close the first time so I'm ordering a new one.

thanks the white line runs all the way straight down the center wire. i just had to clean it up and then i could see which wires go on which side. I put the sensor back on and now it works.
