Silver cylinder thing with three male type slot plugs. It is under dash right of emergency brake, left of steering. It gets very hot. What is it and should it get hot?

Is it about 2.5 inches long and 1-1/4 wide? Sounds like the turn signal or 4 way flasher. It shouldn't get hot unless the signals or flashers are on. Why isn't it in the fuse block I wonder?

Timer for the halo ring around the ignition switch. Hot is normal if the door's open.

one of the funny things about my job. guy comes to the parts counter and says his turn signals dont work and he diagnosed it as this little silver canister under the dash. that must be it because it gets as hot as a firecracker. picture this conversation about twice a month.

no sir, that's not for the turn signal. that works the halo on the ignition cylinder.
whats a halo?
the little green lamp around the cylinder.
mine doesnt work.
it doesnt matter, the relay still operates.
well this thing was hot enough to burn my fingers.
yes sir they do that, it normal.
it cant be normal, its too hot. i'm gonna replace it anyway just in case thats my problem.
well it's $15.00 and i can tell you it wont fix it. it's also an electrical part so i cant take it back. i'm not telling you i wont sell it to you, but i am telling you it wont fix your problem.
go ahead and order it for me, if thats not it i'll get something else.
cash, check, or charge?

just a little insight into the day of a parts guy

No kiddin'? I'll have to look for this. :? I was curious why it wasn't where it should be. Naaahhhh. I'll wait until I do the cab swap, I'll have it out then anyways.

just leave the drivers side door open for about 5 minutes and then grab anything silver under the dash. trust me, you'll know when you get a hold to it   .

I met my first one working under the dash on a 72 Monaco. Why did they have that HOT little timer relay hanging there for so many years???
I am thinking the engineers really didn't like car stereo installers.

It would seem to me that anything that got that hot would really suck the battery down quick.

I was under the dash saturday wiring in my RC tank. I never saw the "silver bullet". I looked for it briefly, but then got back to business. I have enough trouble, I didn't need to go looking for a burn!

Where's is this halo supposed to be, exactly?

Around the silver "insert-key-here" part?

Do all first gens have them?
