4th Alternator??

Postby REBELHIGHBOY » Thu May 17, 2012 5:20 am

Well when i got my cummins 92 w250 the alt was not pushing enough power so i figures i would get a new one which i did. There was no bearing noises at that time. Well that lasted a month and then i needed a new one for bearings then a week later i needed one for bearings. So i just kindas figured it was just a bad batch of them. Well i got about 2 weeks out of this one and its making all kinds of noise. The parts store said its my truck which i would believe but i have not lost any other accessories or even blown a belt.
Any ones thoughts?

Sounds like a bad batch of bearings to me. Since your parts store is throwing such a fit, I would ask them to get a hold of the manufacturer of said alternator and let them know that you have gotten several of thier units and all of them have had sub-par bearings in them. I am dealing with the same type of issue, with a low pressure piston lift pump. Correct pump, just wrong internals creating higher pressures. No quality control since it was made in Turkey  At leat the pump supplier (middle man) is investigating why the pump was wrong :?

That's good that they are helping you out, seems like most places these days don't really give a hoot about the customers when it comes to dealing with faulty parts...

Why not rebuild one of them. New bearings from a better source are relatively easy to put in. Just my two cents, Mike.

Well i guess its time for the 5th Alternator.... This is really starting to get old. The parts store says them are not going to replace this one because its the truck and not thier part. I just dont understand why it could be eating the alternators but nothing else is effected in my serp belt system

About the only thing that could possibly eat the bearings is that the belt is too tight. The only cause for that would be the idler pulley is too strong thats sort of hard to believe. You might take a look at the idler pulley indexing mark make sure that they align or are very close to align. I think you would be better off to get your money back and go to an alternator repair shop and have them rebuild it or at least have them diagnose it. Just my two cents, Mike.
