How similar are the Cummins and Gas electrical systems?

Postby rcb » Thu Feb 07, 2013 7:43 am

Excluding the obvious differences of alternator, starter and batteries, how much of the electrical systems are the same?

Are the interior wiring schemes fairly similar?

As the two batteries are run in parallel, I'd think the rest of the cab electrical would "normal".

1st gen diesels only have one battery, as stock.
The wiring harnesses have similarities, but one has something the other doesn't and vice-versa.

A gasser has electrical injector wiring and electric fuel pump feeds, a diesel has neither.
A diesel has a grid heater system, not so on a gasser.

A gasser doesn't have the same message center and a WTS light.
Yes, you can make it start, run and charge with the gasser system, but there would be computer codes and/or a CEL.

Technically you CAN plug a diesel engine harness into a gasser dash/interior harness and have it work "properly" (no fires or burnt components), but certain things just aren't there.
A lot of the lights that are used are really only there to inform you that these systems are actually functioning, no lights, no way to warn you something is wrong.

Thanks. In my case, it's a 4bt. I've picked up a fleetguard diesel pro 235 that I'll be tying into. Some of the lights and gauges will be plumbed independently.

So just one battery?

How does the starter hold up vs 2nd gen?

You're lucky ---I had to replace mine when I replaced the clutch & rebuilt the Getrag 132K
It was leaking---not bad, but it needed it, especially since I was right there anyway.

More often than not, the starters overall hold up just fine. Have to replace the contacts every once in a while. $25 in parts. The one on the pos side burns up and gets thin. Can get the ones for a 24v starter and runn them. A LOT more surface area, and last a long time! :) Acts almost like a dead battery when it happens.
