Any 31 series battery with around 1100cca will work. I've had the O'Reilly battery in my truck for 3 or 4yrs with no problems,a carquest one before that. They're all heavy duty as far as I can tell and seem to hold up well....plus they're a good bit cheaper than optima batteries ;)

awesome thanks for the info. id love to try out an optima but im on a budget right now and could use that extra 100 bucks towards new battery cables. i dont know much about batteries i just know the one the previous owner put in is way too small i think its 750CCA.

I am running dual Optima red tops on my 91, I tried running one on my 92 a while back, I don't know if it was the age of the Optima (8+ years old) or just that it didn't have the oomph to turn it over as fast as the stock lead-acid unit. Running two units sandwitched side by side, there is plenty of juice to turn my 91 over. With our mild winter, I never plugged it in and never had an issue starting it. Both of my Optimas are very old, but they still work great. I have completely discharged them on accident, and I was able to bring them completely back using a pulse charger.

On a budget, I would use a good 1000+ amp lead-acid unit :thumright:

Try to stay away from the Carquests. I had a pair in my 2nd gen and they gas like crazy, it's impossible to keep terminals clean. A few days after 1 died, (1 month before the end of warranty, the pro-rate was 2/3s the cost of a new one) I was on TDR and saw thread on there, many people posted the same thing.

Being on a buget, just wanted to throw in there that continentals are free replacement for 18 months. CumminsPower if you got 8+ years out of a battery it would be well worth buying those optima's. Might have to get me some!

I have had nothing but great results from Optimas'. I have three of them, the newest is six years old. Some people aren't fans of them, as they are spendy, and if they get completely discharged, they can be tempermental to bring back to full charge, got to "shock" them with a high amp charge to get something into them, and then put them on a pulse charger for a few days at less than 10amps, they come right back to life. Lots of folks don't know how much different AGM batteries are than Lead-Acid. ;)
