I think I found it

Postby cougar » Sun Mar 31, 2013 7:55 am

Been fighting an intermittent auto pilot issue on the 92 for a while mow, but I think I may have finally found the culprit. Yesterday warmed up and was able to spend some real time troubleshooting the system. What was throwing me for a loop was everything was ohming out correctly. So I started taking apart pieces. I eventually found a cold solder joint on a tiny little circuit board under the set/coast switch on the steering wheel. The ohm meter didn't show it because of its minimal electrical load. Under normal electrical load, the crack in the solder would open and either turn off or not allow the cruise control to turn on. It showed up when I started flexing the board. Now I need to go try it and see if I fixed it this time.

I've learned yopu can't depend on ohm meters too. A bulb wired in makes a good tester, it loads the wire enough that if only 1 strand is connected it shows right up.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Yep. Been down that road on a old Mack. Had to replace the wire between the pass through connector on the firewall, to the 4 pin connector above the steering box. My boss had the dash all apart. So, between the 2 of us, it took 2 days to find it.
