bad cps?

Postby Dodgecrawler2011 » Mon May 06, 2013 6:17 pm

Long story short my truck has been somehow loosing its gap. Ive set it 3 times now seems to do it after it warms up. I loose od ac ans doesn't charge. I set thw gap and everything is good for awhile. Well yesterday I tryed to set the gap again to no avail. Did it about ten times. Gave up and parked it. Sat all night fired it up this morning and what do you know everything thing normal again. Does it matter when I set the gap? Cold motor hot motor.?

It shouldn't matter. there is no preference in the FSM about it.

It shouldn't matter if it' off a little. It's just a sensor looking for the notches in the damper going by. You might consider double-checking the plug right there at the IP to ensure it's making a good connection with the wires themselves intact.

If I'm not mistaken, I don't know that the CPS is a problematic thing.

Actually, now that I think about it, the danged harmonic damper isn't necessarily round. That may explain the variance you're seeing.

The FSM is very clear in that . . .

Be sure the sensor is not near either of the notches on the vibration damper. If sensor is adjusted at or near these notches, it will be damaged when the engine is started.

Just rotate the engine so the sensor is close to centered between the notches of the damper. and you should be good to go. :)

Is it reading the while time truck is running or does it go thur cycles? Maybe it was shutoff yesterday with it reading on the dampner where its pose to?

My bet would be a bad crank sensor. With many electrical items, when they go bad, will work when cold but not hot.
'92 ex-cab, A/T, 3.56, timing bumped 1/4" , 366 w/ fuel 1/2 turn past collar, smoke all the way out and a ported HX hot side. Airbox and core support drilled for more cold air.
A no budget work truck.

What brand part did you buy? Did we go to the zone and buy a gp sorsen pos el'cheapo or did we buy the repackaged duralast gp sorsen for 20 bucks more.
If you indeed bought cheap parts they can be bad out of the box. I deal with this fact every day, that's why I only buy borgwarner, echlin, standard,or dealer parts. Nothing like installing a bad new part to ruin your life

This ain't rocket science or brain surgery, if the AC wont work and the alt isn't charging there is not but a few things that can cause it. Computer, cps, bad ground or bad power source. Those four things are the starting point to diagnosing said issues. Check out the electrical section, there should be wiring diagrams that I posted there....if they are not in the stickies.
