Turn signals don't work when running lights are on

Postby 9312v » Thu Jul 04, 2013 7:38 am

Put some led tail lights and front marker lights in my truck and now my blinkers don't work when my running lights are on. The dash looks like the hazards are stuck on. I put a electric flasher in the other day and it didn't help. Also my passenger side light doesn't have brake/tail or turn. Just took that part of the harness out and fixed any bad spots from the po tapping into it for the trailer plug. Still nothing. Tried switching the bulbs from side to side and the problem stayed with that side. So I am assuming its not a bad bulb. Any help would be greatly appreciated

The front lights have to be bulbs, or use the load resistor thingys with your leds to simulate the resistance of a bulb.

Isn't there a write up on tdr?

Why about the passenger side tail light then?

Since you are messing with aftermarket stuff, check that they assembled them correctly.
99% of the time, a glowing dash light is related to a bad ground at one of the park/tail lights.

Here's a topic I put up outlining a factory defect on a bulb and it's affect on the operation of the park/tails and turnsignals.

The front turn signals are tied into the front fender markers. Your getting back feed threw the maker light into the turn circuit. A normal bulb in the turn signal provides enough resistence so the marker goes to ground threw is own ground. The LED has no resistence to back feed. You need to find the splice point and install a one way diode into the turn signal feed to the marker.

I got two diodes from radio shack. That are larger 3a 50v ones. Now ever I'm not sure which wire to splice that into. I have a print out for wiring but I have a black yellow tracer, light green and black wires. The side marker light has a black and black with yellow tracer. Also the drivers side has a wire running into the cab that the previous owner installed im guessing because its house wire not automotive

When in doubt, check which wire in the plug HAS VOLTAGE.
Ground a test light or volt meter, turn the park lights on and whichever has voltage is the "hot" wire and where the diode should be placed.

The other wire is the ground.

IIRC, the "hot" wire should be the one with the yellow stripe.

well i went out and bought a new socket for the rear tail light. it now works but seems dull compared to the other side . Do I have to install the diode after the splice in the wire or could i do it at the front marker light?

You need the diode in the turn signal wire before the factory splice into the marker circuit.

Installed the diodes and it still doesn't work. Maybe they fried them selves, it does act like it wants to blink. I have been running the halogen bulbs because this didnt work. However I did some digging and came across this flasher unit http://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo ... r/779/833/ is it worth the 12$?

I would also like to install the led side marker lights and Cab lights at some point in the future.

When you end up with a full load of LED's you will need a no load flasher. Check a local parts store. you might find one cheaper that $12.

Did you install the one way diodes correctly?

The white band is away from the front of the truck. That's the correct way? Isn't it?

I installed a electronic flasher unit when i first put the led bulbs in

this one:
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detai ... &ppt=C0241

Now the rear tail light is acting up again. When I first got it working correctly, I took the section out that plugs into the harness on the drivers side. The PO had hacked into the harness for a trailer plug. So that should all be good now, I had power where I was supose to have power at the main harness with the tail lights, stop, and turn. Now I know that the brake light doesnt work for sure.
