You mean in the alt?

But from my understanding the green wire coming in is what controls what the alt puts out, correct? Because when I tested that yesterday, it was bouncing all over heck.

Oh....you tested the system then. Well then idk and disregard my statement

All I can say is I'd just do away with the entire mess.

You don't think your reading was coming and going because of the crank sensor or maybe there's AC voltage being dumped into the system.

How can AC voltage be dumped into the mess?

It is possible and what I'm thinking is, the cps is bad and possibly sticking.

Eric the second Gens charge the same as our setups do.....as far as I know anyhow. Some how they manage to dump AC voltage and the reg in the computer not be bad. Some usually stop doing that by one of two ways.....change the alternator or clean grounds.
Either way it's all a damn guess for me which fixes them, seems it's that way for most I talk to.

Weird................well............when I get back, I'll clean everything and double check some wiring and wait til it stops charging again.

If the alternator or regulator (or charging controller) is bad you could get power out from the alt. which resembles AC more than DC. An alternator does produce AC power but also converts it to DC internally.

I know when I had a charging issue (not charging at all), I had to replace the alt. Well, first I regrounded my rusty old OEM regulator (worked for a few days), then put a new alt. in it and never had a problem since.
Here's a thread I found with a wiring diagram. http://www.dieselbombers.com/1st-genera ... -help.html

Lesson for the day;
Alternators generate AC current, which is passed thru diodes and changed into direct current. Anyone remember the old (early '70's) motorcycles with a rectifier? (a bunch of flat plates stacked on a central post about 2" square with 3 wires going to it) That did the same thing as the diodes, AC in DC out. ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

So..................before I left I went out and moved it to be out of the way................and magically it is charing like normal.

Came back today.............have nothing, popped hood and checked voltage at battery .26volts..........frucker's shot.

I'm getting unexplainably pissed off.

So, yesterday I jumped my truck.........not charging again.

Tested the alternator, everything SEEMED to point to that. (the things coming in were doing what they were supposed to, nothing coming out)(if I revved it up the volts would go up from .7 to 2.5).......alternator, right?

Today bought a new alternator, jumped the truck.......the f-ing thing won't charge. Check alternator, putting out .05 volts, rev it up and it'll put out 1.0 volts. Revved the piss out of it and bam now it's charging, 14.5 volts.

It's the CPS.
I finally found one this morning, if you still want it.

Ya, you might as well send it out...............It's been working now all morning after I got it to start charging.

But I really feel like it's gonna stop charging any minute.

As an update............after a couple of days of driving around it was still charging so I told Mark not to worry about sending me another cps.

Now that it's been a fully week (almost) it's still working great.............apparently it was the alternator.
