Coal rollin' light switch??

Postby Arnold Layne » Tue Oct 01, 2013 8:47 am

I knew my 8-month old light switch was heading south and when I was coming home last night it started to stink like a burning electric train, just a couple miles later I had smoke rolling out of the left vent. Joy. To disgusted to look in yet, do they like to melt the plug connecter too? Does the gas truck of the same year that's out in my salvage facility (back yard) use the same harness and/or plug? Got to think it's time for relays.

As far as I know, the switch and plug are the same...

Yeah, the connector is toasted, they usually are. I think the gasser parts are the same too. That'll keep you out of trouble for a few hours. Or if you're like Parker, weeks. ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

All the current for the lights goes thru that switch, right? Didn't somebody do a writeup where they added a relay to reroute all the juice?

There is a write up over on DTR, I am currently building a headlight harness with relays for my 91...

Well, the "day cab" truck is getting old, I'm going to have to fix the lights. I haven't pulled the switch out yet, expecting the worst concerning the female plug. I'm set up for relays now, but the only life left in it is the headlights, no dash, park, clearance, or soon to be deleted "good buddy" lights. Is there any way to get access to some of the harness short of pulling the dash off? I really don't want to do that. __ Got the switch out and the plug down far enough that, with enough swearing, I can change it. The B2 post is burnt bad, the wiring itself looks pretty good.
