charging/starting issues please help

Postby jmd4993 » Mon Nov 04, 2013 4:19 pm

i had a fusible link issue a couple weeks ago. i replace the fusible link with an inline fuse. then one day my speedo and odometer stopped working and my radio kept shut off and turning back on. so i checked the battery and it was at 4.96 volts. so i bought a 800 cca marine battery. I drove home and unplugged the battery then drove to school and unplugged the battery then when home and when i was going to work the truck would start. my moms school bus didnt even jump it. I charged the battery back up on a small trickle charger and then installed a new alternator and its not reading 14 volts like it should. im not sure where to go from here. all the connections on the alternator seem fine and clean. im not that good with electrical ive installed my gauges, my FASS, and my radio. thats about it.

the battery is at 11.9-12.1 volts right now and it will start now ive started it about four times today to test the alternator again and its still only ready 12 volts. the guy that helped me with my getrag swap said that i dont have a regulator in mine truck.

just put a getrag in my truck i want to get this ironed out so i can get to driving my new 5 speed

any info is greatly appreciated.

What year is your truck?
If it has burnt one fuseable link then chances are good it might have got another and you missed it. You need to pull firmly on all of them because some can burn and not melt the outer cover leaving it appear fine.

Does your truck still have the FSS? If it stars and runs, then you should still have 12v going to your regulator for the key-on wires.

What about your engine ground?

Honestly, it sounds like you've still got a short somewhere. That's why your gauges are flickering.

my gauges dont flicker my radio goes off then on again repeatedly. my speedo and odometer doesnt work. when i was driving to school before my care started dying slowly everything in the truck wasnt work but i could still drive it. but after a while i only could manage like 5mph even if i floored it. how do i check if those fusible links are still good to i test them with a test light?

thanks for the info

Yes you can use a test light, but I always pull on them with my fingers first.

Call it a lesson learned the hard way.....I once had an old gasser dodge that had an intermittent lose of power and I looked over a bad fuse link 3 or 4 times before a pulled on it and it stretched some.
Your computer isn't getting power.....I'd put money on it. It uses the crank sensor to see if the engine is running, when it sees the signal it turns everything on.....alt,AC,cruise. I am however guessing because I don't know what year model truck you have.

Then it works like I said. Have you checked the fuses inside?

Well usually when folks have the "no charging" issue it's usually related to the crank sensor being bad,but.....you have something totally different going on.
If I where you.....I'd buy a Chilton manual or (if God smiles on you) a factory service manual and look up the wiring diagram for your truck. I'd find the 12v supply for the computer and test it with your light.....if there is no fire, then I'd back track from there. It's obviously not turning on.

Now I can tell you that the ignition switches (electrical part) do go out, will burn up. That's another area I've a unique experience with

Awhile back I posted up the wiring diagrams on this site in the electrical section.....it wasn't stickied or anything so you'll have to dig for it.....good luck and use the advanced search function :thumright:

i was looking at the diagrams. they dont seem to hard to read but what will the computer be labeled as? cause i didnt see anything that stood out to me. you said something about the ignition switch be burnt out but it will start with the key if it has enough juice. its just not keeping a charge.
thanks.

It would be the powertrain control module diagram.

What I meant by the switch burning out is that it will lose contact to one of it's pins.....sure it'll start, they nearly all I've seen bad will. That pin is the one used the least in side the switch. There's a diagram on it too.

The computer will be the "PCM".

but a burnt out switch wouldnt drain the battery and prevent it from charging would it?
