Check the VSS, the ratio adapter, drive gear, and the wiring to it all...that's where I'd start.

the odo works fine still if it was in the vss or adapter\wiring wouldn't the odo be messed up also?? The needle for speedo bounces bad it will hang around 30mph for a mile or so sometimes or it will bounce around 45-60 when i'm running 60 then it will drop to zero. Whens its been at or close to zero I've watched the odo and it still moves normal.

On my truck the speedo works fine but the odo sticks...lol maybe I should make one good one out of two.....

I should mention also it only does it when the temps are in the 30s.

The first thing I would expect was to see "rounded wear" on the square shoulders of the ratio adapter input which is causing some slippage. The lube inside the ratio adapter is probably thicker at lower temperatures and causes more resistance to turning the adapter.

The only way to check the odometer is to travel a measured mile and compare. This only works if you are still running the factory size tires.

Seen that every time I have made repairs in that area.

But, if one has larger than stock tires, you can use the revolutions per mile for the stock tires, and then the larger tires, divide and you have the % of difference to calculate into the equation.

Another way to figure out what ratio adapter you need...kinda hokey, but if you got a smart phone, it'll work. I used it to figure out what ratio adapter I needed for my 91...

Take your smart phone and download some sort of a speedometer (they run off GPS).

Put the VSS directly on the speedometer drive on the transmission/transfercase.

Run the truck up to whatever speed, 55, 65, 70 (whatever works for you in your area) and hold steady at said speed and make a mental note of the GPS MPH and what the speedometer says.

Take the speedometer reading and multiply it by the ratios availaible here:
http://www.transmissioncenter.net/speed ... ____va.htm
(the adapters are about 1/4 down the page)

You'll want the ones that speed up...what percentage depends on the difference to get the speedometer up to the GPS speed..

Hope this helps ya

I'm not sure on how it all works on those 2wd's, I've only messed with 4wd's...

It rounded the edges on the vss. I cleaned the grease out of the gearbox and put new in. And epoxied the vss in the gear box lol

Funny thing is, the speedo started bouncing on my pile, I ended up loosening up the ratio box and the VSS, I must've had them too tight or something, because I moved them around and just slightly snugged them this time and no more speedo bounce.
