Be sure to track down what shorted before you throw a fuse around it and go, it'll just leave you sitting again.

so on my truck the orange outside wire is the one that burned off on the duckbill and when I touch them together they melt so I must have a short somewhere, what is that wire for

I *think* that's the wire that powers your gauges and radio, possibly the ACC slot on your key or something. I'll have to check my book at home to be sure though. Perhaps pull your dash and make sure your radio harness isn't rubbed through.

That is a nasty short though, no doubt.

On my truck it goes to a suspiciously thick, pink and black wire before going into the cab bulkhead. It's one of the few fusible links that are still intact on my truck, so I've got no offhand knowledge on it. :?

According to my book, that wire goes to the ignition switch, then to a 30 amp fuse and to the heater/AC controls and power windows.

Is it shorting with the key in the off position?

Hmmm, pull your fusebox and find the AC and power window fuse, yank them out and see if it's still shorting. If not, replace them one at a time and see what's shorting.

Troubleshoot from there.

^thats actually not a good way to do it, if you have a DMM then check the circuit for continuity to ground. You don't want to risk melting your harness over this.

Here's the pic from my book, it's for a '90 model truck so don't take it as complete gospel. It'll be #50 connector in the middle left of the pic.

I checked all the fuses in the box and threw in a different ignition switch and still shorts out, maybe the grid heaters shorted

it wouldn't be as irritating if it wasn't in the negatives outside where the truck is

Mine did this the other day and turned out to my power wire going to my voltage regulator was bare and grounding out. You have a wire touching someplace I would say.

Grid heaters don't go thru the ignition switch. The PCM turns them on and off and the main power for them comes right from the battery.

Well, that wire must do something else on the later trucks, I can't imagine it would stop the engine from running unless it's messing internally in the switch.

Did you pull those two fuses out and try? Try pulling every fuse but the ign fuse and seeing what happens.
