CPS and magnet driven tach....

Postby thrashingcows » Thu Dec 26, 2013 12:08 pm

So my question is this....Will the magnets on the harmonic balancer for a tach effect the CPS sensor?

I was running the two magnets...180* apart on my fluidamper balancer for a tach. This was on my 89 motor so I did not have a CPS sensor. But since I'm switching to the 93 motor from the 4wd donor I have been in a bit of a confused state as to what I should do?

My Tach gauge is an Isspro R5501...so I believe it only works with the magnetic pick-up?

Thoughts?

Are you using the wiring and everyting else from the 93 donor? If so, just tie into the factory plug. If you aren't using anything driven off the CPS, then just use magnets again.

Yes I'm using all the wiring and sensors from the 93.

If your current harness has the plug for the add on tach, I'd just tie into it. A harness that goes between the plug and your tach can be made for cheap and works well.

But the Isspro tach I have, I believe, only works with the magnetic pick ups.

If it is similar to two R5503 (which I run) it will work. I had the 4k tach I'm my old 92. I made a four wire harness like I the sticky on DTR and it worked great. I do have mine wired up to a magnetic pickup now, as my 91 is a NON-IC truck...

Thanks for the heads up on that....I appreciate it!! I decided to do a little digging on the Geno's website and you are correct!

The R5503 is just a 4K tach...as opposed to the R5501 being a 3K tach. The funny thing is on their website the R5501 tach description only lists the usage of the magnetic pick up. But in the R5503 description it says to use the magnetic pick up...OR...the wiring harness adapter for 92/93 trucks.

I checked their link for the wiring harness, and it specifically lists the R5501 being used with this their conversion harness, and the the 92/93 wiring.

Here's the link....

http://www.genosgarage.com/TACH-TO-OEM- ... r0kerS2KSo

So looks like I just need to make up a wiring harness to go from teh factory 92/93 Tach plug in the wiring...to my R5501 tach...Sweet!!

Glad I could help! Been following your build over on DTR, very nice work. I hope that someday I will be able to build a crew.

id like to put a tach in my 91 intercooled truck, im wanting to install a factory setup. i dont see any provisions on the engine for the tach, but i do see what i believe is the harness under the dash. what does the factory setup use for the signal trigger and where is it located (harmonic balancer?)? ive seen the cps on ebay, so i assume its some kinda wheel. im mostly interested in what id need engine side for hard parts, i can make the harness. also what did the factory setup use for a tach? was it in the dash or on the dash or on the steering column? not sure id use the factory tach, unless i could find one, but id like to run a factory sensor/sender setup. thanks.

its run by the cps on the harmonic balancer....unless you get extremely lucky or want to drop 300-400 bucks on a 20 year old tach buy an aftermarket. The tach mounted on the dash,

did the cps take signal from the 2 notches (about 1" across) that are 180* apart in the balancer? or was there a special part/balancer that went with them?

so is there anything special that has to be done with the notches or would you just have to put a cps on there and wire it up?
what cps will work, is there more than one? and will the isspro tach just plug in to the factory cps with their adapter cord and be off to the races?

thanks for the help guys

Sloppy, you need the install kit from Isspro. Don't even mess with a CPS. If you had a 92-93 truck, then you could wire into the factory plug. There is more to it all than just mounting a CPS and wiring a tach to it. Save yourself the headache and run the install kit from Isspro, it's a suuuuuper easy install. I do recommend pulling the harmonic damper, and giving it a thorough cleaning/degreasing as you'll need a good bond for the magnets to adhere to the damper. I found that a 1/4" gap gave the best signal from the magnets to the pickup, as the recommended setting wouldn't give an accurate signal above 2000rpms.

Didn't 91.5 have the factory plug??
