key wont go into ignition

Postby jmd4993 » Mon Dec 30, 2013 3:07 pm

my ignition was able to start the truck without the key for a long time and i was rushing to the store and didn't bring my key and of course when i went home the ignition wouldnt turn. so i bypassed it by hooking a wire to my lift pump and then one to the starter.

one thing was weird the truck wouldnt accelerate over 30 or so unless i was going down hill.

now when i go home the key wouldnt go into the ignition which has never happened.

any info would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you need a new ignition switch. Did you happen to put 12v to the fuel shutoff? If not I'm surprised it ran but that will explain the lack of power

Sounds like you have a nicked plunger since it wasn't killing the truck but limiting fuel. They aren't the easiest to get out from what I've read. I'm sure someone else who has changed one will chime in soon.

Shut off solenoid is easy; cut, bend /break the bracket bolted to the pump head at the top of the head, then use a 15/16 wrench to screw it out. You may not get the wrench on if it's in the wrong spot, some people have used a hammer and chisel to get it loose. Remove the solenoid, remove the plunger (watch the spring in it) and put in the new one.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Yeah, I've had that happen on several old Dodge trucks. Look into the keyhole, it'll become apparent what happened. You just need to turn the outer ignition ring until the slot lines back up with the tumbler slot. Easy peasy.

no the holes are lined up just wont go in. how to do you replace the cylinder. theres these weird star head screws. its a star with a round pin in the middle so none of my bits will work can you even get that bit in a store never seen anything like it.
